Recently got a new job and I am debating on wether to get an apartment at a place that I can walk less than ten minute to work or get a place that is like $300-$500 per month cheaper and drive 10-20 minute to work. To be precise, my new company is located in Domain(a entertainment/fancy/expensive district). So renting in Domain is a bit more expensive but you get garages, luxury amenities and walk to work everyday. So which one? Heard Austin traffic is really bad 10-20min is based on Google map. Really depends on how much you value those luxuries. The domain is in a fairly suburban area so you should be able to get a reasonably priced apartment within 10-15 minutes drive without much trouble I think. The domain itself is really nice and walking to work is a huge perk so if you value that I think it could make sense to live there. I’d probably find something cheaper within 10-15 minutes drive myself though.
Do you live in Austin? Any recommendation?
I lived there a few years back. I’d look around an exit or two north on mopac towards wells branch if optimizing for commute time and rent price. I might look a few exits south as well to be closer to downtown, but I’m not super familiar with how rents are down that way; I imagine it’s still a bit cheaper than the domain though.
I live in Austin (cedar Park) and work in the domain. I wish I could get back the hour long commute daily that I sit in traffic both ways. If I didn't have a kid I would totally live in the domain. If you are going to drive to work buy a house before the market explodes again
Arboretum area is a little cheaper and still close to the Domain. Not quite as walkable, but close to Target, Costco, Trader Joe’s, a smaller Whole Foods.
Which would you recommend? Arboretum or Domain or other places?
We (family of 3) like the arboretum because it’s near places where we need to go like grocery stores. We looked at places at the Domain and, though they were nice, we felt they weren’t worth the extra money. But there’s a lot of new construction, so maybe you can get a good deal now.
dude rent around the domain. You will never have to leave the area to have a great time, and if you do it will be a 20 buck uber.
Also consider the money you will save on gas by not having to drive
Forgot about this!
Gas in Austin is very cheap at 2.15. Any decent vehicle with 25-30mpg should be fine
