Look at these average salaries of H1B visa holders. These are not cheap labor salaries. These people are paying taxes - >30K in taxes every year. Those taxes go for US to take care of its citizens providing them with social security and Medicare benefits. Median annual income of US individual is same at 30K-35K per year. Now that's cheap labor. So a work visa holder is 3X more productive in taking care of US citizens in their old age AND also his aging family back home. That's a true individual whose life of service is well lived. I am proud of the choices you made. Don't let anyone question your choices. Chances are they made some bad choices themselves and throwing shade on you. TC: 300K
That's cheap labour , reducing wages. Who cares about the data?
Source?
Doesnt matter
Cherry picking H1B data, which is only 1 out of 185 different types of visas in USA. Don’t forget the illegal immigrants who burden the system.
I never get how illegal people burden the system where it is a point of concern. They can’t get food stamps or stuff because they are not legal. So the only thing left is emergency care that I can think of .
I am indifferent for illegal immigrants. As a visa holder I have my own problems. But I believe illegal immigrants are still getting some help and benefits from possibly local shelters and such. There are even loans for undocumented aliens in WA. Now I would not call this a burden, if they need help and if local shelters want to help I am all for it.
I made 130k as a new grad, today 130k is LOW BALL for a new grad.
Unfortunately, there are many on H1B who barely scrape through 100k. It’s like saying all immigrants are engineers.
Yea but if they didnt have a visa, maybe one of those 'average' us workers would have the job instead. Not saying you're wrong, but people don't vote for what's best for everyone, they do what's best for themselves.
I get where they're coming from. But what's the solution. Voting is not gonna work. Better skill up.
@Microsoft one big flaw (out of the many in your post) is that tax revenue doesn’t actually help the American people. The US government only has about a 10% efficiency rate with governmental spend. So that “30k” in taxes becomes 3k in effective societal spend. Meanwhile, increased work competition, reduced educational opportunities, increased home prices can far outweigh that 3k benefit. Immigration is one of the US’s core competitive advantages, but it’s not implemented anywhere nearly optimal nor are American citizens even top of mind when deciding its implementation. That’s the fundamental problem.
What does 10% efficiency mean? Does that mean 90% of tax revenue is wasted?
@Ford correct - but it can even be worse than that when you consider second order effects. Theoretical Example: Government hires 2,000 workers for the federal government that provide no legitimate services. They pay those workers above their personal top of market in comp + pensions. Those workers can not be fired, even for poor performance. This would be 100% “waste”. Had those workers not been hired, they would have worked in the free market, for companies actually providing concrete services to citizens. Now those companies’ cost structures are higher because they have far less workers available for hire. Raising prices on everyone else. This would be a second order “waste”. This would be an example of a government spending a lot of money and effectively hurting their population.
You forgot to include the H-2A workers salaries in your analysis.
Good point. Updated to reflect I am talking only of H1B here.
Dont forget H1b works mostly in CS industry.
Others too. The list I shared has many professions listed.
🤣🤣🤣🤣. Yep. This is the data that's missing. Congress will pass immigration reform now
Need to control for cost of living
Also lca don’t usually include rsu , there another 30 k
