I am about to jump to Azure Redmond office. How is the culture and wlb in Azure Specialized team?#tech #azure #microsoft #redmond
On call awful across the board in my experience
When you’re not on call you’re easily working less than 40 hour weeks in azure. I’m not sure about Amazon, but compared to Google, Microsoft is able to get a lot done because perf/promo incentives are more aligned with what’s good for the business, there is far less bureaucratic overhead, there is stronger leadership/ownership, and Microsoft has quite a lot more (and better) PMs than GCP
Roughly until some time in the Principal band you more or less get promoted for doing a good job of whatever your management chain asks you to do. At Google it’s a struggle for managers and employees to come up with projects that work for promo, and the way that promo forces you to design and implement your own 3+ month projects, even for L3-L4, is really inconsistent with building good products. Additionally there’s a strong leadership requirement for L4-L5 promo that often results in L4s not doing very much coding because they’re trying to focus on design and leadership.
I've heard it's good, WLB-wise. Heard some negatives about GCP, but not much about Azure
Heard sth bad about GCP +1
GCP WLB is generally as good as Azure or better for L3-4 but probably generally worse for Senior+. It balances out though because Azure on call is way worse. And because we pay like way more than Microsoft (and pay for on call)
