I got new grad software engineer offers from both months ago. Amazon (AWS) in Seattle tc $180k ($140 salary, $40k bonus), Bloomberg in nyc tc $170k (150k salary, $20k bonus ). I barely had time to decide and accepted both because I really was stuck. I like the idea of being young in nyc which is a big draw but at Amazon I’d make $25k-30k more after taxes, rent, expenses, etc and work on modern tech. I feel like if I go with Bloomberg it’s almost irresponsible because of how much money I give up and how much I’m spending on rent but at Amazon there’s stress and layoff scares. Now the decision itself is stressing me because both want to start the onboarding and planning events and I don’t want to go too far without making a final decision, and I’m juggling school at the same time. Which would you pick and how can I better decide these things in the future? I appreciate all advice and feedback. Edit: Amazon tc is 180k #tech #faang #amazon #aws #bloomberg #newgrad #newyork #seattle
Join Amazon. Work for few years. Then join Google/Facebook. The learning at Amazon is incredible!
You must hate this young man if you want him to join Amazon.
Learning to get PIPed?
How are you guys getting into new grad positions, when I hardly see any on their careers page?
Intern return offers and applying kinda early helped me. Probably applied to around 60 altogether between August and mid November
I followed updates from this repo: https://github.com/ReaVNaiL/New-Grad-2024
Bloomberg without a doubt...but mostly for the NYC experience. The city will give you access to the best food, music and cultural experiences that one can get access to. As a NY resident and working for Bloomberg, you will get great perks and discounted access to the city's attractions. You will not only have a strong company to your resume but will also walk away with a great life experience and pretty cool stories 😎
Can you please share a bit more information. Are you getting started? Or you have been into the industry prior to finishing the course? At the same time what are you looking for? If learning is a priority then go for the Amazon otherwise Bloomberg offer is both good and relatively safer as well if you consider how Amazon has big tech doing the layoffs. Don't worry too much about the money. You can always cover the money in the long term. Enjoying while being young and single will help a lot in terms of both growing as personally and professionally. Feel free to DM if you want to discuss this.
Sending dm, but for those with similar questions I’m just getting started after bachelors degree. I’ve only interned before this. I don’t really have any expenses or responsibilities I need money for right now besides school. Once I’m done probably 30k loans at most
What will be your job title at both?
SDE at Amazon, SWE at Bloomberg
Does 180k at amazon also include stock?
Nah just salary and bonus. Amazon offers very little stock in year 1 so for now I’m focusing on cash
I thought the base was 129k
Amazon is the most shitty company driven by politics. Either you become very successful or an utter loser based on the project and team composition. Team members are very stealthy and competitive, they care about their own survival over actual skill growth
Are you new to blind? Have you not read about the sh*t show at Amazon? Do not choose Amazon. You’ve been warned.
Bloomberg, no question whatsoever.
Bloomberg as you are just starting your career. It is a safe space for you to get some decent corporate experience under your belt. Amazon if you want to have trial by fire
I live in NYC I know many people from Bloomberg. There are many people form Bloomberg at Datadog too. My two cents — you have to be extremely proactive to get good work at places like Bloomberg. Otherwise you won’t learn much. I vote Amazon
