Got an offer in Mercari, Tokyo office, but to work in US app team. Does any1 know how is wlb and team there? Yoe 9 Tc 110k usd now
Take this with a grain of salt https://japan-dev.com/companies/mercari There is no company in Japan where all employees work 40 hours. The question is are those people that spin their wheels aimlessly for 60 hours a week on your team or are they your manager? You may have to just give it a shot. What is your offer btw?
Sorry, didn’t get you about 60 hours a week. Where is it stated in your link? :) Offer is still at negotiation stage, but would be around 150k I think
That is my point. It is not in the link and won't be. "Service overtime" in Japan is illegal... And it is also expected. Word on the street is that Japan has reformed and has adopted a US model but that is bullshit. Japan is incapable of change. I know for sure rakuten is team specific, despite being "westernized". Apparently some teams didn't get the memo that it's not 1985 and they should go home and bang their wives. :). Others not too bad. Might be worth asking on /r/japanlife. There are many engineers there. Just don't mention you don't currently live in Japan (if you don't) as the admins are unironically very Japanese about that rule.
There are definitely companies where people aren't doing 60 hours a week, this view is outdated. We are one. If you haven't interviewed with indeed drop me a pm
One of my friends is a PM and, while he can’t speak to the US app team specifically, says the WLB is generally pretty solid and the people are fantastic. Hope that helps.
Thanks mate
Wlb is pretty good if you’re working on the US app, can’t attest to Jp work culture but since everyone is WFH pretty sure it’s similar to that of the States. People are great, haven’t really had any bad experiences so far.
Thanks, gonna accept the offer then :)
Does Mercari pay well compared to the industry?
In Japan specifically it’s good, but there are still some US-based firms that beat them out (i.e., Google, Amazon, Nvidia, Indeed, etc.) There are some numbers at the bottom of this article: https://japan-dev.com/blog/software-developer-salaries-in-japan-the-ultimate-guide This site also has some self-reported datapoints: https://opensalary.jp/companies/mercari
Hey thanks so much. I’m looking specifically for the pay in mercari US office though. Any insights you can share?
Interested to know as well
