Have only super basic JS/TS and frontend knowledge but I see several opportunities in my job to learn it. Like I see several occasions where I can say either "I'd like to just focus on backend" or say "ok I can take this frontend task". But I wonder if it's worth it. What's better, backend or full-stack for a FAANG career? Why?
Choose whichever you enjoy more. There are plenty of opportunities for both full stack and backend.
Do what you like or what you are good at. Even a good front end developer can fetch more than average backend engineer.
I agree with all comments above, but just to add a contrary opinion. I say go with Backend. Coding bootcamps focus on teaching mostly FE skills. This means experienced FE devs have to compete with a constant supply of entry level developers. FE development gets more scrunity and can also be stressful as everyone has an opinion on UI including non-technical people. Nothing worse than the startup CEO saying "hey can we move this section over here before we ship? I need it by Friday for the demo, thanks!"
I was in a similar situation about a decade ago. I love infrastructure stuff and so I chose backend and I’ve been reasonably successful with that choice. The only downside of backend that I found was that I never developed the skills to work on any moderate side projects as most of them required some front end work.. this is not to say that I couldn’t learn them on my own, just the inertia felt too much most of the time.
Did you ever switch companies in between. If yes how much did you need to prepare for system design since you would have already been doing that in your day job
I switched from AWS to Apple. Didn’t need to focus much on system design other than understanding the basic structure of the popular AWS services.. most system design problems in interviews could easily be reduced to a AWS service

Why doesn't OpenAI offshore and reduce expense by 80%
I'm always in favor of exploration. You won't know if you like something until you've tried it.
Amen to that
