Badly want to do masters but too expensive

My goal is to level up computer science knowledge not getting a job in USA by doing masters. I’m already doing that in Seattle, currently in the first year of l1 b. I’ve less than 3 years here to stay ( assuming worst case if l1b extension rejected ) Looks like there is no financial support from Amazon. I’d like to do Computer Science or Data Science MS and want to peruse state of the art AI research. Currently in Seattle and I’ve evaluated every other online offerings which are trash. Only UW curriculum looked appealing and realistic to me . $42k for University of Washington part time MS which I wont mind going physically during evening time. Any suggestions to finance this ? I’ve a good credit score of 750+ but looking forward strategy to offset some cash in return during studying. I’ve time till september before making a decision to enroll in next the batch. TC :- $250k 26Y #career #study #masters #softwareengineer #tech

As someone with a master's degree from the US it's a complete waste of your time and a bigger waste of your money. Tech needs curious minds and problem solvers. If you have that you will be fine.

Not true brother. There is lot to solve in computer science. Day to day Software engineering job is shit and mundane repetitive CRUD operations. Companies stopped doing innovations. It’s not about just that. It’s about reviving university life again and learning more, meeting like minded people. For some deep learning , you really need to understand papers, why that works. Having a structured curriculum and learning from industry experts is the best option. The faculties are industry experts.

Sorry to be bearer of bad news but one year masters aint gonna gove you enough knowledge to read and understand Deep Learning papers. You need 5 year Ph.D program (which is free if you get in). One year masters is simply breezing through bunch of random coursework that you can find at udemy or coursera - just on campus and surrounded by other like minded people who have either disillusioned themselves that MS degree will give them something of value or are there purely for F-1 visa and OPT

Masters will only be useful for specific rolls/positions. I wouldn't recommend loans with such economy, you will pay a lot in interest s

AS is the ultimate goal but let’s not talk about that. Out of the scope

I'm in the same boat I do have a masters in CS but want to do an MBA, to try and move to management

Learn on the side and on your own. You’ll be doing the same in your masters anyway, no one is going to spoon feed you all that knowledge.

Masters is a racket. Either bachelors or PhD. Masters is too smart to be bachelor and too impatient to be Doctorate.

I worked at a company with tuition reimbursement to get mine done. I wouldn't have done it otherwise.

I know MSFT gives something of $10/year not sure though

Aurora gamrinfo Apr 9, 2023

Yeah, it forces you to basically take one class a semester, but you only need to take 10 to graduate.

With your TC, is it that difficult to spend on this on your own?

Amazon scientst53 OP Apr 8, 2023

Not difficult but it’s damn too much money lol can buy a Honda civic or Mustang probably. Otherwise looks like not worth doing as people suggesting

This disease of doing masters and multiple masters is common in India. And Indians think that because Americans are dumb, that’s why many Americans don’t do masters. Masters is good if you want to learn some new field, new from what your undergrad major was. It’s like a guy with a B.S. in biology, who wants to do M.S. in math or computer science, but doesn’t want to do Ph.D. Why masters programs of any American school is filled up with F-1 students? Two reasons: OPT after M.S; and maybe EB-2 I-140. If you are passionate about learning, take online courses. If you want a degree for immigration purposes, that’s a good reason.

I got your point no need to spread hatred. Found better option parttime phd https://ischool.uw.edu/programs/phd/admissions I don’t care my goal is to keep doing computer science since I’m a CS guy. Lol 😂 so much hate. Smoke some good shit and be calm 👍

I am not spreading any hatred. What is reasonable in one context becomes unreasonable in another context. That is, if you have good reasons to pursue Masters, go ahead and do it. Then again, you worry about the cost. Masters programs in the US schools are money makers, and also for foreign students it is a way to get their foot in the US (good reasons for both students and schools). There are good reasons why Indians pursue masters in India or abroad. Almost all engineering colleges don't teach any sh!t, and students just study "all-in-one study guides" every semester to get their degrees. So, for people who want to learn, they want to get "real education" --not "all-in-one study guides"--by going to better schools for masters. For some people, going to IIT for masters is a way to get a job in the industry. For others, getting masters is necessary for promotions if they work for the government. This is also partly case in the US: that's why many law enforcement officers get degrees from online schools so that they can get another $10K more. In old days, when people couldn't get jobs after their B.A/B.Sc, the next step is to M.A/M.Sc, then get another M.A/M.Sc. Then frame all these degrees on the wall: 'Mr Sandeep Singh with 20 masters degrees, a passionate learner from rural Madhya Pradesh', says the headline of a local daily news.

No one does research with masters in the US. You have to go for a PhD if you want to do research. A lot of work and years of poverty ahead of you along the way…
