You need to factor in state income tax in CA that does not exist in WA, also sales tax is higher, so is cost of living, including rent. I’d multiply that by 1.25X.
1.15x if you are single and do not have a recent plan to buy a house, 2x if you want to buy houses in the same condition. So, just somewhere in between depends on your life style. I would say for most people, it should be 1.2x ~ 1.5x. I have many friends living in CA. I also seriously considered to move to New York so I did some study. To buy a house in the same condition as mine (15 ~30 mins drive to work, 45 mins ~ 1 hour to most of the potential employers, 8+ grade schools k1~k12, 3000 sqft new house from one of the best builders) in these two places would cost 3x or more what I paid here in Seattle. You may get faster promotion though in CA because experienced first class people are in startups or core positions in FANG. There are plenty of space for inexperienced engineers to grow. This cannot be measured by salary.

In your case, just ask VMware to increase the number to 1.3x of what amazon pays you, and ask Amazon to match whatever amount they can, then join them. It is a more promising company than VMware by any measure.
