I am a young software engineer, and I find that living and working in Bay Area is overrated. I have been house hounting for a while and didn’t see anything that’s worth the money (poor construction, small lot size, old building for heck of a price). I found that there are beautiful houses and condos in Austin I can buy in cash with the amount of money I am planning to put for down-payment of a condo in south bay. Should I move to Texas, find a job, and buy a nice property with the money I have? If yes, which city? Austin, Houston, Dallas? I am leaning toward Austin as it is supposedly the most modern city in Texas (close to SF bay area), cmiiw. I prefer a place with nice city life (fancy restaurants, nice bars, cool place to hang out) and closeby hikes / beaches / open nature. And what are some good tech companies to work for there?
Best option is to take a transfer to Austin in the current company. That way you maintain the salary levels.
I work for a startup, and the only office we have is in silicon valley
Most companies will adjust your pay to account for the reduction in cost of living. Is there anyone that doesn’t do this?
The weather in Texas sucks. Bay Area has the best climate. I’ve also heard that Bay Area companies treat their Texas offices as a second class citizen. From my experience Austin has more homeless people compare to SF and a lot of drunk students 😆 Check Denver, CO.
^ this is probably the best answer you’re gunna get OP. Colorado really is the bees knees if you can handle the snow
Snow is not so bad in Denver. Not crazy like in NYC or Chicago.
Things you like just described bay area. If you are capable, suck up for 5 years and get better house and wind up with more equity building?
How do you like TE Connectivity
Pm me if you want to find out. I am not in bay area though.
TC or GTFO
What you described sounds like the Bay Area. Maybe ask for a raise?
Sure Austin. You seem to be valuing the wrong things especially with regards to real estate. Physical structure has little to no value. Land and location is what you pay for (in the bay and austin). Worth considering sf though too.
Yes please move
Maybe spend some time in these places before up and deciding to move?
Austin has a lot of good tech Companies.
