I pay $2400 for a match box sized 1BHK in N San Jose. My lease is until Nov 2019 (like two months from now). I was hoping to buy a house but that's not happening and I don't want to get on another lease with the same apartment or a new one. What options do I have? Best case scenario- I somehow manage to buy a house (I highly doubt) ? Airbnb for several months??? Forget buying a house and stick to paying rent I am the only occupant of my 1BHK.
North San Jose have good size Apts around 700-800sq.ft for that price. How is that match box size?
550sq.ft
Then you didn't look around enough. I am staying in >800 Sq.ft with $2500.
Roommates. Many roommates.
You'd think I am exaggerating- 1. Stayed at one place where the majority of the crowd was from one particular country (red flag I should have paid attention); one of the girls threatened to break my car if I didn't move it. Language/cultural issue; landlord from same country and didn't choose to act. 2. Stayed with two guys thinking too many girls will have issues. One of the guys was into hookups and brought random weird women home and was shadey to me as well. 3. Took a 1BHK to avoid all above drama.

If your savings will put you at a down payment plus 6-12 months reserves in a matter of 1-3 months for your target area/home size, go Airbnb, crash on someone’s couch or live in your car (if you have gym/shower at work). If that timeframe is less than a year you could ask friends who own houses if they have open bedrooms. Otherwise just find another place to rent until you have the savings. Best time to buy is yesterday if you plan on staying there long term.
Have you considered homelessness? It's increasingly popular in the Bay Area, and with good reason. Just find a good thick sweatshirt, and at least two pieces of corrugated cardboard for your pillow. Save your $2400/month, or do what many homeless do and blow it on drugs. Either way, you'll be on your way to home ownership in no time.
Is that what you do?
There’s always the #vanlife. Likely much more comfortable than that suggestion, with the added benefit of being trendy.
Look harder. You can get better options in that budget. Or a 2bhk with one roommate
Many families rent our a bedroom in nice homes or better, an in law unit. You can save several bucks.
