Brief summary of my current situation: - On F1 visa in the US. I20 expires in Dec ‘23. - Have a TAship (fee waived off plus monthly salary) which i can probably continue on OPT. - Have an internship offer at a local company for an SDE position. - Have worked for 3 years as an sde in my home country. - Also possess a B1/B2 visa. - Have savings of about 40k USD It took me a lot of effort to finally get an admit to my dream school and come to the US. I don’t want to go back home right after graduation. Given the market conditions it looks like I have limited options: #apple #google #meta #amazon #netflix #faang #microsoft #career #recession #yahoo #phd #h1b #engineering #cscareerquestions #it #wipro #intel #netapp #newgrad #newgradsalary #intern #interview #visa #opt #jobhunt #jobopening #sdet #devops #sde
All options are right for one or another person. You need to ask this question yourselves, what do you want in your career?
Money
Don't be sad, young graduate. Hopefully the worst will be over by the time you graduate 😃
Thanks 😭
Hush hush now
You are thinking to much, I think you would be able to find jobs
40k savings.....
From my job in India.
That explains..I wonder who saves money while doing masters
There will be far fewer companies hiring new grads in 2023. This situation for new grads may not persist in 2024. If you have an option not to graduate in 2023, TAKE IT. This is what lot of foreign students have done during the great recession.
Phd. Get it in ML. Join G, Meta or whichever high paying company you may find, when you graduate. Fast track to a GC, earn big $$$ and enjoy life. Btw, try to get a gf/bf while doing a phd. Thank for me later, after 8 yrs. :)
I bet OP is already atleast 25 years old, considering work experience in India. After PhD, OP will be 30 years old with no savings. I work in ML team with around 50% PhD with same job profile as me. I will say PhD is not necessary for most ML jobs.
@eXxk75 thanks for the advice! What are the odds of GC btw after doing PhD? I’ve mostly only heard of people joining academia getting it. @TheDude, Yup I’m older than 25. And also Indian. If I don’t get a job soon I’ll probably never get married (all Indians are taken by 30).
You say you have an internship. So why not go for internship and keep job search going? If nothing found, ask professor for work on opt for rest of the year. Keep job search going. You will find something good during this time since CS is still lucrative. No need to think of Canada or India.
Do companies become reluctant to hire people who’ve burned time from their opt doing other work?
Don’t think so. If you only have 1 year left on opt without h1b then yes. But with 3 years left, not gonna happen
What’s your school ?
GaTech
what's your specialization, OP?
