Thank you AAPL and NVDA
Hi. I'm in tech but not an engineer (in Ops). Been considering getting formal education for coding. Heard GA is too expensive and not well respected. Any recommendations for bootcamp? And should I start at full stack? Thanks in advance.
Udemy? Leetscode
Hack Reactor, App Academy, or Fullstack Academy
Definitely don’t do GA. App academy or hack reactor are good.
Just to clarify ‘coding’ and ‘engineering’ are two different skill sets. Bootcamps will teach you coding skills but will not be as in depth in engineering side - math/algo/logic etc... I recommend connecting with people via linkedin who went to bootcamp and are in position where you want to be. They may provide better insights to your questions than here.
I disagree with this. I believe it depends which bootcamp you go to (from my own personal experience)
Yeah you come out of these things doing blue collar coding stuff. What I mean by that is that you learn how to use frameworks, APIs, etc to build stuff rather than develop the frameworks, APIs, etc that you're using Not to say you can't learn the other stuff after a boot camp (or before). It will just take time and dedication outside of your day job.
That’s the case for literally everybody who is new to something
Of course. I think the impression some prospective career changers have when considering a boot camp is that you're a full fledged computer scientist or something coming out of one of these programs.
I recommend taking as many free online classes via freecodecamp, udacity (free ones), and blogs. Build a portfolio of apps in different stacks, MERN and MEAN before starting bootcamp. Also aim to be at least 5 kata level in CodeWars, pref JavaScript or any language you want to learn at target bootcamp. Start learning data structures and algo via leetcode. Do this before you start bootcamp. This will put you ahead of your classmates at bootcamp competing for the same entry level dev jobs. Plus, you will absorb more knowledge during your study at bootcamp.
Hackbright?
When looking at bootcamp outcome numbers and starting salaries be aware that the starting point of some of the grads may be different — meaning some graduates of Hackreactor, App Academy, Fullstack may already have marh or physics degree from MIT or Stanford — which would make them more likely to be hired fast with high salary. Make sure you ask your bootcamp admissions officers what kind of background did the top 10 percent of graduates who obtained the highest salary, mid and lower percentile. Most bootcamps won’t disclose this info publicly.
I went to app academy and I don’t think this is an issue. It’s true that some students had that kind of background, but most didn’t, and they still almost all went on to get high paying jobs in tech.
Fang reject what was your major Edu level? I am also thinking to join App Academy. Have business undergrad.
GA is not well-respected??
This is what I've heard from some coders. It's over priced. If there are differing opinions here, would love to hear them.
What’s wrong with Georgia?
