Hello All I sinned in early 2023 by not listening to your warnings and joining Amazon for the TC bump. Life was an absolute hell last year. My manager was luckily not a bad human being, but everything else was hell. Bad teams, peers looking to stab me in the back, territorial wars, incapable leaders, blame game and so on. After leetcoding diligently, I got an early stage startup offer, and is planning to leave mentally by end of Jan and join the startup from early Feb. Unfortunately I cannot discuss the offer details here as I will most likely reveal myself given the small size in the startup. I would like to get your valuable advice on how to leave Amazon maximizing the compensation I get in my remaining time. Instead of giving 2 weeks notice, can I take sick leave for 2 weeks to get pay and then give the notice to leave till mid Feb? If there is a way to get double paid for a month of Feb, I definitely do not want to lose it. Nothing for me to lose, as the most they can do is to pip me or fire me which I dont care any more. What other innovative strategies have others done in similar situations? Customary TC - 350k, YoE - 8yrs, Level - L5
Listen if Amazon is torturing you just leave what’s the point of coming up with a scheme of “maximizing compensation” That said I think taking some pto and putting in your notice when you come back is perfectly fine.
PTO gets paid out when you leave. So no advantage of taking PTO before you leave. I am looking for other strategies if any, like paid sick leave.
Ohh that sucks. We got unlimited pto so didn’t think of that
If you are planning to leave by end of Jan then your options are limited. Probably what you wrote about sick leave. Pip takes a while to turn around but would have been my suggestion. Milk a little more money out of Amazon before you leave.
I am planning to leave mentally by end of Jan. Physically can be later if there is a strategy to get paid.
Oh no, if it isn’t the consequences of your own actions. Literally everyone here says don’t join Amazon or TikTok, people still do it for the TC bump, and then a few weeks or months later you see a post like this.
Agree, hind sight is 20/20. I hope this post helps future readers at least.
I have an Amazon offer I’m considering 😭
Announce you are joining competitor and get garden leave with pay. It may back fire too though.
Seems interesting. What is garden leave? Can you please explain? Is it if the company fires me on the day I give notice, they pay me for the next two weeks?
They don't "fire you" but they just cut your access and pay you for the next two weeks.
Is few weeks of pay really worth it to push your start date? If you are not happy leave at the earliest.
PIP severance is like a sweet send-off gift from Amazon. Don’t miss that. It will be around 40-40k for your tenure. Start slacking off now. Don’t quit until you get PIPed
What happened to professionalism. This is a joke
Where is the professionalism when recruiters and HR lie to us? when peers stab you at the back? when leaders forget the leadership principles and focus on just their career and salary. @ouhP13 Keep drinking the koolaid and preaching for professionalism.
