I'm currently a senior SWE at Microsoft, and I'm looking to get into a managerial role within the next couple years. However in Microsoft, given how large the company is right now, it can take another 5-6years and I wouldn't want to wait that long. What's the best way currently - switch to another company? If one does switch, what are the companies to move to? FAANG would have the same problems of them being too large to move up, wouldn't it?
Seed stage Startup, given that you know the market and you know the cofounders. But it costs you almost all your Microsoft/ google salary.
Just make sure you know why you want to be a manager and what the job really entails.
I've kinda believe it aligns well with my strengths and interests. Looking to find a way to pursue it now. :)
Why’s it so hard for you to become a manager at MS? At amazon it’s pretty easy tbh
Takes approx 12-15 years experience and Principal level to become a manager at MS, and not even guaranteed after that. I don't mind putting in the effort, but not when the outcome is uncertain and dependent on politics, "diversity", etc etc.

7 YOE is great. I’d move to a more agile company. It’d make it easier to make the transition. Also, that’s something that you can mention in your interview to get a sense of whether your new manager is ok with supporting you.
