Beware ladder inflation in Google Cloud

There is Google … and then there is Google Cloud At G Cloud, lots of their people aren’t in the actual ladder: - Not being in the ladder means they didn’t pass the hiring bar (Difficult interviews) to call themselves something - For instance, a G Cloud Data Scientist usually isn’t in any of the G Data Science ladders, they are basically a salesperson with a fancy title Cloud diluting the ladder cannibalizes the rest of the ladder: - For instance, putting a C-student into the same category as a bunch of A-students lowers the mean, the C-student looks smarter and the A-students look dumber; the customer expects an A-student and gets a C-student G Cloud should either: - Interview to the hiring bar of the ladder - Change the titles to something else

Same thing happening in AWS ProServe and virtually any consulting firms.

Slalom Consulting zx1op4 May 10, 2023

Can confirm consulting firms. This my first swe role so I thought everyone with a certain title would be around the same level at least in regards to the company. But my goodness some seniors+ are clueless and others are on a completely different level. So confusing

Same with banks, any client/user facing role gets title inflation.

Disney dawndon May 10, 2023

You mean a 27 year old tech VP (who simply hasn’t gotten fired for a years at a bank) isn’t the same level as Jeff Dean?

Why can't you just be happy with someone else career progression?

Google oaDh23 OP May 10, 2023

Being called a Google Data Scientist without having passed the bar to be a Google Data Scientist dilutes the title, G Cloud should either: - Interview to the hiring bar of the ladder - Change the titles to something else “Data Analytics”

Google trpk47 May 10, 2023

Not at the cost of others who worked harder

Oracle ->AWS May 10, 2023

This is there in every firm! It boils down to individuals personal choice and preference. If one chooses to go for prestige and fancy firms one has to accept these trade offs

Google oaDh23 OP May 10, 2023

Please elaborate into an unambiguous and coherent statement

Oracle ->AWS May 10, 2023

This is corporate culture. Fancy titles does not imply people are doing some really good work. Companies manipulate titles for different factors such as to find talent who give more preference to titles than salary. Another reason is to sound better with clients. It’s all about perception management

Amazon DpNs74 May 10, 2023

Beware of… posters who put the words ‘beware of’ in the titles to get more engagement, but offer no new substantive information.

Google oaDh23 OP May 10, 2023

The post was a cohesive statement of facts with synthesized context and a well-defined proposition Please state what exactly is immaterial about it

Amazon DpNs74 May 10, 2023

Lol. I bet you just googled ‘How to write and argument’. 😂😂 Such an attention wh*re

Cisco eR05Hj May 10, 2023

I tell you honestly that if I interviewed with Google and didn’t make the hiring bar I’d want to know so I could solve and come back. Giving me a pass gives me a false sense of accomplishment. I’d quite literally be an imposter.

Microsoft CmLo51 May 10, 2023

Really? 😂

Cisco jassy_boot May 10, 2023

Same with AWS solution architects.

Amazon oeja46 May 11, 2023

What about them? Curious

Cisco jassy_boot May 11, 2023

Low bar and inflated titles.

Flexport UAlN24 May 10, 2023

I remember there is a SE 1 at Google said she documented some existing code and after that she said she is the expert in Google and should be paid staff level salary and won’t accept TC less than 500k.

Oracle ->AWS May 10, 2023

Lol 😂

Makes me want to get a director job in product at Google cloud and leverage that to be a director in another faang

For a lot of companies, title/pedigree perception is paramount to actual skills. If an inflated title is something someone can leverage to make more money… why wouldn’t they do just that? Kind of the same as paying someone more just because they attended HBS or Stanford… that pedigree doesn’t usually drive more value for the company (unless you’re going into consulting/etc) but people those degrees still carry a premium. If you can’t change the way the game is played, then become really good at playing the game

Google w_0_0 May 10, 2023

I'm not part of cloud, but if title inflation makes cloud more money long term... Title inflation will be here to stay...

Google oaDh23 OP May 10, 2023

I care about ladder inflation, not title inflation

Netflix ImNotAlive May 10, 2023

And again.... If it makes them more money (by allowing them to hire the right people who wouldn't otherwise join), then that is the right business move. The company doesn't owe you "a bar", lol.
