Hello, I'm looking for some advice as I'm kinda struggling at this point as a may new grad and don't really know where to go from here. I for the love of God cannot seem to get interviews at all and it's getting extremely frustrating. I've gone through referral after referral I've done hackerranks with referrals to pass all the test cases just to receive rejections or no responses at all. I've got two internships(non fang), no name school, and IT experience working for 3 years during school and even stuff listed from high school when I worked IT during that period as well. I'm not sure what to do if I'm passing hacker ranks, using referrals, and then just getting ghosted / rejected. I'm not even aiming for faang at this point, I'm aiming for ANYTHING. I am beyond frustrated. I've done resume re-writes, have had it reviewed by others, and I just have no idea what to do at this point. #engineering #software #swe Here's a copy of my current resume, I've gotten positive feedback on it, but I'm sure there are improvements to be made, input is appreciated.
I could send your resume to hiring managers at HD if you are interested. Locations would be Atlanta Dallas or Austin
I'm absolutely interested. Where shall I send it too? I know I've applied to HD in the past but applications never got responded to.
DM me
There could be something wrong with your resume with respect to the positions you are applying to. You could post your resume here with identifying information redacted.
@OP is getting OAs. Shouldn't that signal that their resume is working?
I've definitely considered that, and I imagine there are a fair deal of applicants that have been rejected because of that, but it just seems so extreme that I'm having this much difficulty to get ANYWHERE, I mean there's only so much I can list as a new grad in my resume that didn't do top tier internships and didn't go to a top tier school.
It’s hard even for seniors too, took me a solid 9 months to land something. Tons of rejects from big and small companies. Thought I aced a bunch. Just keep pushing through. I gave up at one point but jumped back in and landed a bunch of onsites and eventually one offer. That’s all it takes.
I have 6+ experience, even I am finding hard to get an interview. I think it’s the timing, hopefully things should change by end of December. I hope you don’t have any visa issues.
Well, there are more mid-senior level positions as compared to an entry level.
Microsoft is on hiring slowdown so would explain why you haven't heard back. Right now is not a good time for new grads with all that is going on.
It just frustrates me that I submitted an application for new grad 2020 and my application is still pending, and then I submitted a new grad 2021 and it's still pending. I'd rather just receive a rejection. At least Twitter sent me status updates every 3 months just to get a rejection a year later after passing the oa and the having a referral. Im just frustrated that I can't even get rejections.
@microsoft when do you suppose the situation would be normal?
Why can’t you go back to CGI? Thought they hired anyone with a pulse
Put the years you attended college on that line like Sept 2017- May 2020. Removed (Graduated) Add a gpa. Consider removing ‘led a 5 person team’ since you are seeking IC role not manager. Have only 5 bullets per company. How bad is the school? Consider a masters if you want a name boost. Good luck
Thanks! It's a real no name school, not exactly interested in a masters at the moment. Would like to pay of my Bachelors first. My GPA is a 2.98 so adding that wouldn't help the situation...
not to beat you down, but if you went to a small school and didn’t even manage a 3.0, you’re going to have a really tough time as a newgrad until you prove yourself. Are you sure software is what you are interested in? Computer science classes are very easy compared to real world engineering/swe interviews
After reading your resume, I'm still not clear what stack are you on? Node.js? Spring? Database? Or are you frontend?
I didn't really think that mattered this early on in my career? Most new grad software engineer positions are generic "software engineer" and then you get thrown on a random team? The stuff I have listed on there are just technologies I've used in projects, or school, or internships can I afford to be picky on a generic job posting that just says they're looking for a software engineer?
I'm on the stack specific side, granted that's how I started my career 🤷♂️
"Identify" as a black woman on job applications. By the way this will teach you to go become part of a sick dying industry like software. You could have very easily became a lawyer (lawyers on average have -20 IQ points on computer scientists), and gotten hired by pretty much anyone now. They are having one of their best years ever, because the society is collapsing, and everyone is suing everyone else over contracts.
Oddly enough I heavily considered law.
Lol, how far identifying as a "black woman" would go? You might be permanently banned if they come to know about this malpractice.
Don't feel bad about faang. They are barely hiring external new grads. Fb and G aren't hiring any right now. Try going for well-established startups/unicorns (like databricks, robinhood). I know for a fact that they are hiring (and the two I mentioned are doubling their new grad hires from last year). If all else fails, maybe just take the return offer and try again next year when the market is more friendly to inexperienced candidates.
I don't have a return offer from anyone because they all went on hiring freeze and don't have any positions open for new grads. At least that's what the recruiters told me. Not only that but my manager gave me stellar reviews and even personally tried and the hm just said for me to see if there were any positions on their website available (wtf??) (they weren't amazing companies but id take anything at this point so I'm not too picky either way.) Ive applied to anything I see posted locally on linked in. When I graduated I had 3 offers all of which were quickly rescinded due to covid and one in the final works and then recruiter ghosted me. Im seriously just so frustrated and disappointed The other day I did twilio new grad hacker rank with referral, aced everything, rejection this morning. Same with Amazon. Same with cisco PayPal I had referrals for 3 entry level engineer positions, they've gone unanswered for 2 months as of current. Nvidia no response with referrals going on a month now Microsoft my new grad application from last year and this year are still pending I can't even explain my frustration.
@FB when do you think the FAANGs will start hiring new grad?
