Hi folks, I have an offer from a Series B for an PM role. The startup is very highly rated, and I'm sure they'll be raising a C soon. Importantly, I'm ~1.5 YOE, 23 y/o MS Pros: -growing org with strong leadership -higher comp: ~$170k -great WLB, less risk/more job security MS Cons: -not doing real product work, it's more program mgmt and I honestly hate it. no product roles open in my org, and been having a tough time getting through internal screens bc of the lack of product exp -influential manager but too busy to really focus on me and my growth. doesn't give me ownership in areas where I'm more passionate -some smart people but not a whole ton Startup Pros: -growing at an insane rate with strong founding team -really sharp people who I know will challenge me Startup Cons: -role is building tooling, not revenue generating, but still more 'product' than my current role -slightly less comp, but negotiated to 150k, 0.01% equity -potential negative resume 'look' for leaving after MS relatively soon In my head, I'm betting on the startup's people and product. All signs indicate that people here are exceptional, and this place will become a unicorn soon. I'm just not sure if it's worth jumping ship for so early in my career. Any thoughts? Thanks all!
Is 0.01% equity good?
Good question. Startup is growing in the hundreds, and this equity seems in line with what you get at such a point. I expect it'll be worth a significant amount even after dilution in upcoming rounds
Don’t accept the lower salary just because they’re a startup
Are you leveled as new grad still for the startup? 1bps of equity is pretty low for series b imo. Ask for 2bps and go from there
I am indeed leveled as a new grad. I'm a bit lower than 1.5 YOE and have my first promo coming up in March at MSFT. Is 1bp fair considering that? Thanks
Where do you look for startups to join?
while many people say LinkedIn or AngelList (which are both good approaches; in fact I got my offer via LinkedIn application), I think the smartest one is emailing top VCs about their winners. email partners at Greylock, a16z, BCV, etc. about which portcos you should join. they're incentivized bc they have info on who their winners are and want to give them more talent. you also win because you can get a warm intro and know which startups have the most momentum. hope this helps!
