Trying to help a buddy of mine figure out his offer from a biomedical engineering startup in Orange County, CA and can't find good salary data for his industry so I thought I would look here. He's working for a startup and he told them he was going to leave if he didn't get a promotion and raise, their offer is a Staff Engineer position at 120k salary, no stock yet. They are planning their series B funding summer of next year and when they do that's when they'll offer him RSU's/options but he doesn't know if it's worth the wait or to push for 130k or if that's even realistic. Yoe: 2 working years but with a PHD in biomedical engineering Anyone at @abott or @medtronic know what a realistic TC is? #biomedicalengineering #medical
I would say this is a good offer for staff Engineer in the area- I live here & work. What is the bonus? Staff engineer at Illumina gets around 130k plus stocks (in San Diego).
That’s a crap offer for a PhD. He could be making 150-200 at most pharma or medical device companies with any real products.
Well - he/she first needs to get the other job that pays 150k - to be able to negotiate.
It's a very good offer for PhD with only 2 yrs exp, he's very lucky to be getting that. I would someone like that at SE2 at best from my time, normally it was E1/2/3 Sr 1/2/3, Staff / Sr staff, principal / Sr principal, SE1 and above have direct reports and staff+ is same level as an engineering manager, but staff is SME track usually so you report to the director or VP, same as the engineering manager
WTF no stock at a startup?
Biggest red flag. He loses his leverage the moment he signs the offer. They need to offer him some % in equity right now if they want him (considering he’s got a PhD, they must want him)
Idk if it matters but the company is headquartered in Europe and they're expanding to America, they promised him series B he will get his equity. They want him I think his leverage is that he can always leave at any time really
I am biomedical engineer with PhD degree and one year work experience. Can still get a base for 110k at Maryland.
PhD in engineering here and I got an SWE offer from Medtronic for 130k, Boston area.
WhT level is this for please?
Senior level
BME is one of those degrees where it really just depends what focus he has. 120k seems okay if he is more in the biology part of the spectrum. Whereas there are also BME people that are skilled coders and doing medical AI stuff that could command much higher than that. BME, 7 yoe, 230k TC in northeast area
🥜
Get the equity offer in writing.
Go to Boston or Oxfor for higher pay. Should be aiming for 135k
That’s a great offer, I was offered around 95k as a senior biomedical engineer around 3 years ago for another company in the LA area.
Thanks for the reply! Honestly it's one of those situations where he'll be happy if he thinks it's fair and it's hard to know. He has a old classmate in SD making way more and with stock and that's our only solid datapoint to go off. Do you mind sharing the name of that biomed company if you didn't take their offer?
