I am evaluating an offer from block (square) for a team lead role and wanted to hear folk’s feedback on a few topics - block culture vs. stripe culture - layoff fear of block - WLB of block (we all know what stripe is about) Offer details - base 215 - no bonus - stocks 800k over 4 year - L6 eng - total comp - 415k Currently - L3 at stripe - base 220 - bonus target 15% - avg of 230k per year - been here since 2021 - total comp - 483k at max but its more like 400k with lowered bonus and grants being low Reason to wanting to leave - Definitely burnt out a bit and overall avg grants aren’t that valuable due to reasons other folks have talked about. Appreciate all the guidance YOE: 13 #square
Take block. Better culture & hard cash L6 is staff so up level on levelling as well. Should be a no brainer PS: personal take, if you are 10+ yoe and still stuck at senior engineer. Then you are doing something wrong.
Jumped around a bit between consulting and project management at a lower tier firm which costed me some years. But whatcha going to do.
IMO “label” means nothing. “Career progression” at “what type of company” is all that matters along with your own knowledge and confidence.
400k paper money that you will never get because stripe isn't doing any IPO ever, or real money?
Stripe had a liquidity event this month where most employees cashed out. They are aiming to have this liquidity event once per year (same system as SpaceX and OpenAI)
Great PR, of course the part that limitedone doesnt want to share or maybe it’s HR is the price of the liquidity event and how folks who joined in 2021 were screwed
Better WLB at block and money is about the same. If you are feeling a little burnt out, block is definitely the best choice imo
Any layoff concerns?
It’s impossible to say for any company imo, even if you are a C suite bc you never know how the business might change from things you cannot possibly predict/control. Any answer I give you would just be wild speculation
Location?
What is L6 in Block? Is that Senior or Staff?
Apparently it can be staff or team lead. I was told it is team lead.
Damn. I was under impression that L6 compensation in Block is much better.
WLB here is good, your equity vests & can be sold quarterly and you would be joining at a relatively low price. Burnout and WLB contrast is already a good enough reason to switch.
How are the blackout dates in terms of selling?
They’re fine, have always been able to sell quarterly vest
About to join Stripe at L3 - You mentioned 483k is more like 400k. Excuse my lack of knowledge but please could you elaborate on “Lowered bonus” - Is it not 100pt of 15pt? and “grants bring low” - Are you talking about performance based grants? Can you please give before and after comparison? TIA 🙏🏻
I would ask the recruiter about it and as for avg - you are fine, you are joining at a low point so you will get the full benefit of the upside. As for folks who joined at the peak like me - the avg kept dropping and stripe never really made them whole so it affected the bottomline.
Are you taking it? I also recently received an offer from Square but I have higher job security here so idk what to do
Don’t know yet. Thus this conversation on blind.
I'd love to keep in touch with you via DM if you're ok. I'm also collecting intel here and there
Have you already liquidated your Stripe RSUs in the recent event?
