I'm graduating from my Masters and am deciding between joining Bloomberg as a New Grad SWE or Akuna as a Junior Quant Researcher. I'm interested in both coding and trading, and want to have to option to do either in the future. Bloomberg pros: - Location (NYC) - Chill WLB, gives me time to interview prep if I switch jobs - I've heard you can transition to quant finance after a couple of years, if you play your cards right Akuna pros/cons: - 30% higher TC (first year) - Can probably transition to another firm in the same role - A friend had a bad experience in the same role, warns against joining - Not a top-tier firm like HRT/JS/Rentec
QR no brainer
I work at Bloomberg. It’s a great place to coast. But QR at Akuna is far better, you can always switch into swe later
I am JQR at Akuna. Great place.
Akuna for the money 💰BB for the resume. Take your pick.
Why would you trust strangers on the internet more than your friend who presumably knows you
His experience could be the norm at Akuna or an outlier. Quant firms are also tricky because their ranking or tiers are not as clear as, say, tech's rankings.
BB for sure! Don't come to Akuna unless they adjust the pay to the current industry level. Their offer might be competitive in terms of TC three years ago but no longer now
Akuna isn't that low, I negotiated with BB so they upped their offer but didn't quite match akuna. How much TC do you think I should ask Akuna for? At a minimum for the current industry level
OP Akuna is expanding very fast which means the bonus pool will be diluted very fast. So your end of year bonus might not be improving over year. Go to BB so that you can join a shop that pays fairer bonuses later. If you join Akuna you would have to sign the non compete agreement.
