Booking.com and layoffs

Hi, I am interviewing for sde2 role at booking.com, expedia (travel industry). Now due to covid, recession how much it will impact these companies. Should i take break from interviweing or ignore these factors as booking.com and expedia already saw lowest in covid times. How is morale at these companies? I asked this as they are hiring a lot this year. Since they are hiring a lot, does that means they will end up in same situation as big tech companies are currently?( hire then layoff)

I would not leave multi-faceted Gartner for the travel industry with a recession looming.

What location?

Expedia Group peh Jan 3, 2023

I think these companies are in a relatively good place right now, as opposed to other companies that may in some way have "benefited" from the pandemic.. but who knows, man

Won’t this sector get hit if consumers scale back on travel due to recession?

Oracle IOwnLanai Jan 4, 2023

Read a few articles stating consumers view travel as an important travel priority even during a recession. Maybe everybody is sick of being stuck at home for the past 2 years?

Booking had a big reorg during Covid. The general feeling in the company is that we're now we'll setup to handle a potential recession.

Can you refer me to booking.com?

Booking.com bsvrvs Jan 3, 2023

Booking is doing good, and there are plans to hire throughout the 2023. No sign of layoff for now.

Expedia Group KetePern Jan 4, 2023

turnover is so high a lot of people think layoffs won’t be necessary. but i wouldn’t be surprised either way.

Noone knows anything ... both of these companies can layoff the next day you join them... don't worry about the layoff but concentrate on the tech stacks and teams

Morale at booking is generally bad and management is amongst the worst I’ve ever seen. It’s just am entry point to get into the EU and find something better which is why turnover is so high. If you’re SDE most likely you’re based in Amsterdam so worker protection is pretty good although they do practice “last in first out” in the event of layoffs. You will get plenty of warning if it ever comes to that though.

Do you work in booking? How did you came to know about management?

Booking.com ha73hsh Jan 12, 2023

As turnover at Booking is on par with other EU tech companies it seems b.gone in just a disgruntled ex-employee.
