I work at a company where the fiscal year ends end of February and the PTO doesn’t carry forward. Haven’t used any of my PTO all year and planned to use it all at the end of the year as it is expiring. Have tickets booked for international travel starting thursday and the boss just emailed me saying they want me to cut down the 5 week trip to 3 weeks. This simply isn’t possible and they’re not letting me work remote. What are my options here? There were layoffs in the company too and I know it’s time to gtfo soon but right now; how do I have the conversation that will let me use this PTO at least This request was approved earlier but now boss says they weren’t aware it was for this long —- this is my wedding and honeymoon trip that everybody in the office has known about for MONTHS Company is Walmart competitor#officelife #culture
5 weeks is a long time for pto. Maybe rebook some stuff or cancel some bookings. Or you go yolo and just ignore them and may end up with no job when you come back.
Just go. 5 weeks is not long. This person didn’t take any of the pto that they get per contract … is not like they are asking g for stuff they don’t get per their contract.
5 weeks all at once is a long time. Taking it in separate times throughout the year is what most people do.
“It was approved earlier, I booked my tickets. I’m not changing plans because you didn’t pay attention”. Then just go.
1) show boss older email (or 1:1 form) where vacation was approved. 2) change trip, with three weeks notice minimum it will be more but perhaps not too much more. 3) look for a new job 4) quit 5) take five week vacation Choose 1-3 of the options above Just note that most bosses can’t afford for their staff to be gone for five weeks so they have to make decisions as well. If option 2) is one of your (up to three) choices then be sure to smile and tease said boss about it for next couple of years.
“Most bosses can’t afford for staff to be gone” .. I think most bosses can’t afford for good staff to quit. That would be way worse for them.
Both can be correct statements, Apple. Lower down he clearly says it was approved so that helps on the choices I offer.
One thing to point out is this is based on your personal circumstances. If you have family to take care as sole income source then probably just rebook. If you are single and don’t have visa issues (and feel confident in your ability to find another job) then it makes sense to just tell them you doing the 5 weeks
Unfortunately have visa issues so will have to rebook but I can’t believe they expect me to just not take all my entitled PTO, that I will lose
Why didn’t you take some earlier in the year. you can ask to see if they can roll over some days as an exception
I got an approved 2 weeks pto and manager tried to get it reduced to 1 week and that he has plans soon after. There was a five minutes conversation where he kept on insisting me to come and i didn’t care. There wasn’t anything they could do
I have never even had a three week vacation. Did you get approval from your manager for five weeks before you planned your trip? If so, your company needs to honor that approval. The compromise is to let you work part of the time remote and carry unused hours forward.
As I wrote, this had been approved by boss for months. Trip was planned and got approval in august this is my wedding + honeymoon trip it cannot be moved but looks like I have to cancel the honeymoon
Tell them ‘ok’ . Don’t change ticket, just tell them you are sick and can’t travel. If needed - Support from home . Don’t cater to selfish people
Go on your vacation and start looking for another job
