Burnt out - what's your exit strategy?

I'm a top performer. I'm well compensated and treated well. But I'm totally overworked relative to my peers and higher ups. This in itself wouldn't be so bad, but the politics and productivity theater of this industry is weighing on me. I'm also sick of the endless supply of people with no life outside of work. I have a great life outside of work I need to reconnect with. The people I'm surrounded by get their meaning from their title and compensation. That's not me. Has anyone managed to make the jump out of tech and land well? Maybe the solution is an adjacent industry where I wouldn't have to sacrifice the benefits of working in tech ( remote work, financial freedom to travel, etc. )

Top performer/rockstar = sucker. Stop associating your identity with work that’d replace you as soon as you cannot deliver. Lower efforts gradually. Passively resist demands from people that won’t benefit your own bottom line

I definitely don't associate my identity with work, but you're right about everything else. I'll think it over. I just hate feeling like the weakest link.

I totally feel the same as OP and found your comment interesting. Can you expand on 'passively resist demands from people' i think there is an art to say no or ignore. I am always investing my time in whoever comes and asks anything from me at work. Sometimes these folks learn from me and screw me over too.

No need to quit. You're at Microsoft. Find some org with a bunch of near retirees or coasters and go chill.

In recognition of your hard work and fantastic results, we're bestowing upon you the work of your slack ass team mates

This is the price of being a high performer. Exact same boat.

Make the jump to another role at another company. And offer less when you get there. Work on fewer things and do it well. The hardest thing is to change perceptions at your current role. It’s never worth the effort, even for a promotion. Promotions are easy when you switch jobs.

I’m a bottom performer who is well compensated because I’m a job hopper
