I live in Seattle so I can get away with not owning a car. However, I’m finding myself very limited: I can’t do random weekend trips at will, can’t go hike without taking the bus which is super slow, can’t even go visit friends without spending $$ on Lyft/Uber, can’t explore the PNW without spending $$$ on rental cars etc, can’t go do my hobbies without spending $$ on Lyft/Uber etc. Skiing season is almost here and I can’t imagine always having to be at the mercy of car rental companies every time I want to go up the slopes. I’ve been leeching on my friends for rides etc and I can also tell that they’re getting tired (they won’t say it, obviously……but I provide good company 😂). Here’s the thing: I live in Capitol Hill and everyone said I wouldn’t need a car. Well, they’re technically right because they spend all the time indoors or the randomly walking their dogs and stuff. For someone like me who has lots of hobbies and friends who are always driving all around Seattle for activities, the bus along with Lyft/Uber/rentals are just not cutting it anymore. The problem, however is that parking at my apartment is $250 so total car costs could be $1000!! What’s the best option for someone like me? Cars I’m considering if I were to actually buy one (vote on these too): I can buy used too but man these prices are nuts for something decent with modern safety features. TC: $180k
Since you go skiing, I highly recommend Subaru
Any really should have snow tires if going skiing
And awd
ITS A SUBUWU
Also look into a Tesla Model 3 or Y. At your TC you should be able to take full advantage of the tax credit (obviously double check this before buying though). For the 3, you might want to wait a few months for their upcoming refresh.
+1 to this. Save on gas
I am confused - I thought the AGI limit for ev tax credits at the federal level is $150K so even with $180K TC, if you deduct 23k for 401k and say 3.5k for HSA, you still don't quite drop down to less than $150K AGI, am I missing something?
Buy a SUV. A new crv/CX-5/RAV4/Tucson/outback would be better.
These seem too bulky
Subaru outback or Forrester is the best for seattle conditions. I havent seen them not sell more than 7 days on the lot
Toyota Prius
I hate this car lol
Crosstrek is the best bang for the buck. Just make sure you get only sport or limited trim level with the 2.5l engine.
ZipCar and gig are getting cheaper. I used to live in Belltown and never owned a car... I just rented from the Avis at komo plaza, $28/day (before gas / parking)
Model Y
I can’t afford it tbh. Rent alone is $2.3k. Can’t afford a car payment that steep.
It’s one stock vest 😎

BREAKING: Internal sources confirm another round of layoffs just hit emails at Tesla. For real.
Why do you think people who told you that no car is needed don't have any hobbies or aren't going out?
To be fair, they probably like to go on Reddit and complain about cars in cities
Maybe they do but I’m sure their hobbies do not involve having to drive somewhere outside the city: maybe they watch movies, go to bars, do brunch, the gym etc BUT ALL THESE CAN BE DONE WALKING or with minimal Lyft/Uber here and there.
