Is it a good option to buy a pre-owned car at car max? Or go to showroom and get a certified pre-owned car?
Depends on the car, if buying a Honda/Toyota I would buy the car I like in the price and not worry about warranties. If talking BMW/Audi/MB go for Certified Pre Owned
Go certified preowned. Or at least get a used car that is still well under warranty. Both are roughly equivalent. I’d buddy up with one of the dealer salesmen and ask them to call you when their dealership loaners are on sale. They usually have a few every year. That’s is probably the best scenario.
What's your budget?
Around 50k. Preferred cars- BMW, mercedes
Some friends have bought CPO on those brands, you get extended warranty which could be worth it depending on the mileage. Have you checked consumer reports? They have a table that shows reliability vs year the car was made, to give you an idea of the “good” years for that particular model.
I used Carmax and got an extended warranty. This was for a fairly rare model/trim combo. A bit of a risk but worked out ok.

I think the extended warranty of certified is worth it. If carmax gives extended warranty, then it doesn't matter, go for anyone.
I would also like to know about pricing. To your knowledge, which offers the better prices?
I've had better experience with certified. Because usually in certified the warranty can be sold back to the dealer. I once totaled a car and got back prorated amount of warranty.
