Hi Community, I recently received offers for a Sr. SDET position and Application Developer 2 position. I am a computer science post grad student in my final semester and I definitely want to get into software development in the future. The ultimate goal is to work as a backend software engineer. With regards to compensation, both roles are playing more or less the same. I haven't worked in an SDET role before so I wanted opinion on which would be the best position to start off my career with. #sdet #offers #jobs
SDET is a fine career path, but most people who I know who took SDET or QA positions have had a lot of trouble transition to an app dev position. If you want to do SDET as a career, go for it, but if you actually want to be an app dev you might have trouble transitioning later.
If your ultimate goal is to be a backend engineer, app dev2 is the clear choice. You may end up hating sdet career
I've done SDET for a while at some big name places. The competition is weak so it's much easier to differentiate yourself. If you're ambitious enough you can just do development on your team and offload some of your tasks to other engineers.
It is typically much easier to get a job and jump to better companies as well.
Can you explain more pls
Good SDETs are very rare but if executed properly it’s one of the best role out there. You will do SDE + SDET and a good amount of devops work. Nothing close to variety of problems that you will solve in this space. The biggest obstacle is most companies have no fucking idea what SDET is.
Ya it's true. They don't know how to interview for them either, asking pointless questions. You hiring?
We had positions but it’s all filled now.
Add a poll.. you ll see the result! And my answer is for Application developer 2 .
