I am trying to rank companies where I want to apply. My target is to maximize first (TC, WLB) and then (reputation, growth opportunity). So far I have: - established and safe, good WLB/TC: google, netflix, dropbox, twitter - healthy pre-ipo: stripe, databricks - healthy post-ipo: twilio, square - high tc, high growth/risk: airbnb, lyft, uber What I ruled out: - bad WLB/culture: fb, amazon, tesla - feel they will go nowhere: pinterest, robinhood - don't like products/culture: apple, microsoft I am not sure where to put snapchat, bloomberg, box, okta, linkedin, and probably I forgot others. Can you suggest me any correction on the classification, good companies I am missing and how you would sort them? Senior SDE, 6-8 yoe, 320k current TC #swe #software #engineering
Why do you think Robinhood will go nowhere? They are all the hype rn
I use several services for trading, I also have something in Robinhood. I find it sub-par, lacking a lot of features and only good for kids that entered the market for the first time. Once the hype will be over I don't see a bright future for it. Of course this is only my take and I wish the best to Robinhood folks
That’s robinhoods target audience. It’s not built for day trading and plotting technicals. It’s for people that are interested in buying stock casually, usually to hold long. It’s quite nice for this, very clean UI, tells you exactly what you need to know without jamming it full of technical info. I think this audience will end up being the larger population of users, number of people who are deep into stock market is limited.
Twilio, square are public companies, not pre-ipo.
thanks, my bad I messed up
All good. They both are good companies though.
Uber has great potential and lower risk as an eng
I didn't mean risk of being laid off, but growth of the company
Bloomberg will likely have the best WLB of any of those companies. TC here is all over the place, but with 8 years yoe you might be able to get 320k (im at 220 with 4 yoe). BB loves to pay more to steal talent from other places. Reputation is pretty good, but remember this is fintech not consumer tech so it wont be as well known as others on your list. Growth is completely team dependent. But tbh, you'll probably grow more at a smaller company.
I'm already with egregious wlb at 320k Tc, I don't see the advantage of changing unless I can push my Tc 400k+
Yeah it would be tough to pull that much at BB since we dont do RSUs. For that kind of TC, Google is def #1. Good luck!
$320K? LMTS?
Yes, Stonks 📈
Salesforce WLB with that inflated TC is hard to beat anywhere.
Why didn't you rule out Databricks for bad wlb ?
I didn't know databricks had bad wlb
It's fast growing and a typical startup. People are workaholics and work even on weekends. Also their Blind rating for wlb is very bad. Also the reviews scream worst wlb.
Not related but hoping to get some insights. If you have an offer from both Twilio and Square, assuming similar TC, which one will you choose? And why?
I'll repost on blind and flip a coin. They are in same category for me
Yeah. But they’re also not similar in lots of aspects (business, stability, wlb...), right? If you have to make a decision, what will you do (apart from flipping a coin)?
Why you don’t like Apple’s product/culture?
Too much team segregation, internal elitism, politics and I don't like their products
Lol first get offers then post this again! Not as easy as you think.
I know, but I don't want to risk to have 10 interviews in a matter of weeks
Don’t underestimate Pinterest. I hope you did some research before ruling it out. Also Pinterest beats all the offers.
Thanks for the info. Unluckily it's very hard to find reliable info on the internet, I trust blind ratings more. I saw from levels.fyi that pinterest pays top but their stock increased more than 2x because of pandemic, I don't know if they will maintain the value after. I wish I could do in depth analysis of all companies but there is so much to dig and leetocde/other prep taking most of my time
Yeah I understand why someone would feel that from outside.
