Anyone have any experiences with internal job transfers? Do they only give a standard ~10% raise on your current salary, or if that would put you at below market value, can you negotiate?
When I moved internally, I didn't get any raise.. be happy with 10% I'd say!
Was this for a higher level position? (I.e J -> K?)
The company I work for only does performance reviews (raises and promotions) once a year (outside director+) so even moving "up" as you mention won't result in a raise until the performance review time.

Yes you can negotiate. You need to answer a few questions: What’s your leverage? How many people, internal and external, can do the job? Does the person you’re negotiating with have the power to offer you more than the norm? What’s your plan if the final answer is no? Do you have an external offer waiting or will just take the 10%
Thanks for the detailed reply. I always thought when you get an offer, you do have the leverage? Also an external person would for sure get a better salary so they’d probably still save with the internal person.
Also regarding your external offer point, if you did have one could you use that as leverage or would that backfire?
