Hi, I just arrived in the Bay Area. Of course I need a car. And I will need to have it insured. I have no idea how to do that, what I need to choose, or what the pitfalls can be here. (suggestions welcome). One sticky point: I have my French driver license, and though I have 10 days (officially) to get a California driver license, the soonest I can get an appointment at the DMV is December 31st. Will an insurance demand a California driver license? If so, is there anything I can do? Thanks
Best thing to do in this case is visit DMV early morning without an appointment. You will be done in 2-3 hours and get a temp DL which will convert to regular after you pass behind the wheel. Benefit is that you can apply for any regular insurance once u get temp dl
Statefarm, Farmers , AAA
100/300/100 is good enough coverage
You don't need California DL to get insurance. You can buy a car and get insurance with your international DL. I remember I got progressive insurance online when I just came to Bay Area.
You can get insurance with a foreign license. You can also just use something like zipcar in the interim.
I tried all major insurers, but only Geico wanted to insure based on foreign license. Only got a CA license 2 years later.
Thanks everyone. All this is very useful.

Couple questions: - do you already have the car? - why do you need a car immediately in the Bay Area?
Currently living in temp housing in San Mateo with SO. Getting around for anything is almost impossible without a car. I don’t have the car yet. I am currently using a rental car that I need to return in a week
