Hello all, hoping for some advice on career next steps. Currently have about 7 years of experience in the security domain with the last 2 being at Amazon. I’ve reached my breaking point for the first time in my career and am willing to move on for a drop in total comp. The past two years I have had many managers that all last 2-5 months due to 0 support or care from our senior management. I’ve been fortunate enough to have received the below offers and am trying to decide whether to take one or stay for the time being and continue interviewing. Right now I am leaning towards the Godaddy offer as it is a solid offer, remote, and I really liked the team. My only concern is around company name/reputation. Would this hurt me if looking for another position in say 5 years? Would consider Cisco, but I could not see myself on the team. Thanks for any advice!
Dont go to C1
Has c1 really gotten that bad? They used to be known for great culture/wlb?
Since the rate hikes, theyve started up pips a lot more than they used to be. They hired amazon execs to be fully remote and are basically forcing RTO. FS (Auto) is the only branch with a lot of openings and theyre in only Plano Tx. Not too bad until you realize the person running that branch is leading the RTO charge and its ONLY in plano while other divisions are in different branches. They have forced distribution which wasnt an issue until pips came into play. Now people in the mid tier (strong) are getting pips depending on where they are in that division while most if not all in the below strong tier are getting pipd too. Wlb has been destroyed. C1 wont declare a layoff but instead made everyone RTO just to silently lay off 15% of workforce via "performance" reasons. I left because I wasnt about to move across the country just to lose my job within 6 months of getting there.
Probably GoDaddy
GoDaddy only because it will help you break that barrier into principal level roles later on (assuming the responsibilities and scope are somewhat true to that level)
Appreciate the guidance. So you’d say it’s advisable to go for title over company tier here? Assuming I could take this to principal/staff or manager positions later
Yes and no. Don’t take it just for title if it’s overinflated. If it is a true principal role then absolutely. The higher you climb the harder it gets to break through to the next level so I would take that opportunity here. Once you are in that next tier it’s easier to make lateral moves later.
I think Cisco is an overall better managed company
Cisco is great if you want a chill job with work life balance and don't mind quarterly silent layoffs and a big layoff every two years
GoDaddy is crap. I have a few friends in there and there’s been multiple rounds of layoffs with no justification
At this point haven’t most companies? I’ve seen many people from Amazon just disappear without warning. Seems like it’s the same shit different name
I thought GoDaddy recently laid of some security people. That would make me nervous.
Hopefully we hire some better ones
Congrats Op - how did you time having 4/5 offers at the same time? I never know how people are able to do this. If you could write a separate post and spell it out, that would be super helpful for many, I’m sure
Which one you take op?
Did you interview while on pto? How to study for security swe interview vs normal swe?
Did not interview on pto, all virtual. Mainly coming from application/cloud security architecture, so more secure code review than full on coding.
