Graduated in late 2022 with a standard CS degree. Market was tough and I went with the first offer that I got. Now, about a year and a half in, I am dying inside. My software progression has been at a standstill because of the project I was stuck on, and there seem to be shockingly few internal opportunities with real dev work. What are my chances of jumping ship and finding a new role elsewhere? Govt work is so safe that it's scary to leave, but it's starting to feel like if I don't make the jump my brain will atrophy. 1.5 YOE, TC: 🥜🥜
What you are experiencing is not uncommon. Look for opportunities and take the best available option (which might be doing nothing). Otherwise nothing will change. I would prioritize your long term development. But don’t worry too much: life is long and underemployment is common especially early on. Keep learning new things. As a worker in the labor market, part of our job is to always be looking for the next job.
When you are young, you need to be aggressive in pursuing better opportunities. Don't wait around or it will become a habit for the rest of your life. Spend time and effort looking for better opportunities regardless of the perception of the market you may have.
