I’ve spent 10 years in FAANG since I got out of college (last 7 in Amazon). I always get good feedback, and I always meet whatever deadline I’m dealing with When searching online, mid-level is bachelors + 2 years of experience. Honestly, at this rate, I feel like I’ll be the only black badge (20 years of service) mid-level at this company. Seems like I reached a dead-end in my career.
7 years at L5? How did you not get PIP already. Be grateful it’s only a dead end and not a cliff
I got exceeds last year. I don’t know what to do anymore… it’s a bit depressing. The job is so repetitive, it’s almost like working at a fast food place, except in a way it’s worse because it’s fully remote for me so there’s no in person interaction.
You have been pigeonholed into ops role. Manager won’t promote you because they need someone like you to change configs instead of feature work.
Get out of Amazon and try your luck at something else? 10 years ,no matter how you spin it negatively, should equal a lot of exposure to different technologies or you're really deep in a niche. Pretty sure you'll be fine, bud
It sucks! Best of luck bro! I will try as well
During your interviews tell people you’re senior at Amazon (assuming you have the projects and skills to back it up) just make sure you’re well prepared for system design rounds to not get down leveled
I believe Amazon will state your job title if asked
Jump ship for a promotion. I think this is a case where you can justify getting the same pay or even a slight temporary paycut if you can get a title change.
IMO the L5 level is way too broad. On one extreme you have L5 engineers who literally have 2 YOE cuz they were new grads and/or former interns who came back to their team and did well. Then you have people who have 10 YOE like you or were staff level engineers at smaller companies who come in and somehow they're an L5
Did they stagnate?
Did who, the more experienced L5s?
Get a second remote gig and make 2 incomes 😎
Yup buddy. I was there last year too. Leave asap
Hit me up op, I will refer you at bnb if you are interested. I know the pain very well.
Either take your career into your own hands or move on. Transfer teams and find a L7 who has a history of promoting to L6. You will probably have to slog it out on a shitty product, but thats what you need to do to get L6.

I was there before. You have to leave. I’m sorry. You’ll be glad you did when it’s all over.
