At what age do you typically see careers start to decline in the software industry?
35
They will fire you at 50
Can confirm my Dad works at your company at 70 now because was fired at 50.
Why ?
I'd say average is 75+ if you stay healthy, stay up with your craft, and take care of yourself. My grandpa worked until he was 82 as an engineer and only stopped because he fell and hit his head and was not the same after that. My dad went back to work after he retired because he was bored, he'll probably work until he's dead if nothing happens to his mind. He's making more money now than he was before he retired.
Why there is no higher option than 65 ?
retirement
After 65, you get uploaded in the cloud
decline isn't a bad thing. going down an easier but still interesting career path can be nice as you age. my mother was a VP in her prime but down leveled herself a few years ago and has been way happier. in software, you could consult/teach
What's there to consult about? You either deliver a product where you compete against the young gunz or you bullshit. Suboptimal options either way.
I’ve seen two companies IBM and Intel lay off everyone who was above 45 in May off waves (mostly swe).
If you can be President or a Supreme Court justice you can definitely do what we do.
50+ and I’ll make over 1mm this year. As long as you’re relevant and add value, then you don’t have a thing to worry about.
Don't mistake luck for relevance.
Are you L6 or L7?
They don’t care about your age as long as you show energy, right attitude and just like anyone else prove your worth for the $comp that you are expecting. Companies know someone in their 50s wouldn’t expect entry level comp. So it’s all about ROI, not age.
Poll options need to be higher numbers
You mean lower
Yeah, why not 85
