I was laid off from Amazon after working for 1.5 yrs there as an SDE 1. Didn't search much for jobs then, since I wanted some time for myself. Its been 1 year since. I want to know how much does the career gap matter in the resume? And how do I approach the companies for jobs? Previous tc: 24 LPA #tech #careerbreak

Everybody deserves to have a break in life
Depends honestly on the market situation and your expectations. I myself took a break at 3 yoe for 6months. Was at amazon only 2 years as sde1 1 as sde2. I came out of break at the worst time q1 2023 but didn’t actually face any issue with hiring. Most likely because i didnt try to uplevel myself, i was just looking for sde2 roles even at smaller companies with no hikes. I was aiming for same package as amazon which was around 55. I even said yes to 48 but then got a 57 one finally.
My TC was 22 when I was laid off at 1.7 YOE. I struggled a lot to get offer, I took a lowball just to get started again. I will switch once I get better opportunity. They lowballed me because I have a career break of 1 year.
Just curious how is Amazon in India?
Rock your interviews. Like blow each round out of the park. They won’t give a shit about your career gap. Everyone deserves a break every now and then, as needed. You shouldn’t worry about it too much, just prep really well (it’s anyways needed right now because demand is f-ed and there’s too much supply at your experience).
I also took a 6 month break. Joining a new company next month. It was not a problem for me. No one didn’t ask anything. I’d just say- I quit my job in Nov last year. Didn’t have much discussion about this tbh.
Yoe before and after gap?
5.5 and 6.
Took 1.5 year off before. During interviews, some interviewers asked, some didn't. I just answered "took time off to think about life etc, kept up with *insert related field* at times here and there though, ready to get back in blah blah blah" Not really a big deal tbh if you can still prep and rock interviews.

How was the time away from work? I am genuinely curious, since not a lot of people do this in India.
