I'm thinking about moving from DS (predictive modeling, hypothesis testing, app/api/model build and deployment) to DA. Because it seems DA is closer to business compared to DS and has better growth potential in the company's leadership. DA may pay less in the short run but has more potential. So what's your opinion on that? Does it sound a good move? Or I'm reading the situation totally wrong? #datascience #dataanalytics
I would not make that move. I would instead think about having similar visibility as a DS. Can you align the company you work for on certain attributes that there is lack of alignment. I would make my predictive models effectively stand up against “opinions” in the company. Once you do that you will be 2 in 1.
In my case my manager is half hearted in the DS initiatives and I don't have direct access to the business users. So kinda tough for me to play that role. Probably in the next org
Why can’t you go to the business users and build relationship, would your half hearted Manager mind that, and if he or she mind then maybe you need to change Manager instead of field?
I did the same because no one trusted my DS work and was ready to implement it at full scale. Now I align closer with BI/ Data Analyst and influence business decisions. I agree it’s a pay cut in the short term but hoping for more management opportunities in the long run.
Best wishes to you. Can totally relate to the struggle you are going through.
Yep ..going through the same thing right now... these clueless non-techy manager types are ridiculous ...they hire you as the data scientist and then try to undermine you by presenting your work, which they are clueless about in the first place, and make themselves look like retards, wasting everyone's time in the process. I hope this isn't an issue in most companies...it seems a lot of companies don't yet fully understand the value proper data science can bring to an organization vs just creating simple visualization dashboards.
Come to meta. You can keep the title. Make more and have influence over business/product. You actually sound like the right person for the ds product analytics role
Thanks! I wish I could! So the growth potential is more about the company structure than the role itself?
Not sure I understand. Product Ds at meta is more of an advanced da/pm role. Which is exactly where you want to go in your op. The pay is higher than what a da would get in the industry. So you get what you want without giving up pay assuming you make less than 300k now.
DS salary compared to DA is 4-5 times
That's a stretch but yeah they get paid less. I know someone who is a Data Analyst at Stripe. Makes 280K.
Compared to DS making 600
Data engineer FTW
DE is paid lower than DS across the band
1. Not true in 5 years when there’s a lack of DE talent and too many data science people who don’t know how to properly code 2. Paid way more than DA
Terrible idea in terms of compensation
DA then DS then go back to Management in DA(Pays a lot than DS in general) should be the plan

Look around, you won’t find many analysts in leadership. I agree the analytics row can be more fulfilling but it’s also often a career dead end.

Why not shift position to that of an analytics manager instead?
So you agree that DA has better growth potential than DS?
No, wasn’t staking a position at all. I was more pointing out that being an analytics manager would give you a seat at the table for business decisions (since that’s what you’re expressing an interest in)
