Hey all, I have an upcoming Carta onsite for senior swe in the near future. Any pointers for onsite? I'd like to do well and avoid any pitfalls. I'd appreciate any insight from Carta folks or anyone who recently interviewed there. Is the system design round similar as design url shortner or design Twitter? What would the project round consists of? Adding more features? How is the morale after covid layoffs last year? Hopefully no more layoffs in the horizon? Thank you much 🙏
Definitely no more layoffs, we are hiring like crazy. Maybe that's the reason engineers looked "depressed" - they just got tired of non-stop interviews
Can you refer me at carta.
The take-home is an overkill for senior and staff engineer.
What is with their home assignment? I spent so much time and still got rejected
If you did minimal work you will likely get rejected imo. Like if you were interviewing for senior engineer role your work needs to represent a senior engineer work that means looking at the entire app as opposed to just the task. you can refactor existing code, apply a design pattern, make it modular and extensible, add unit tests, add logging etc. I spent more than 8 hours total doing things other than the task they described. I feel like this is much better than one hour leetcode but being aware that the downside is they may flat out reject you or no offer after on site. I rather do this than grind six months on LC.
I even got it checked by multiple people and actually spent two days on it making extensible modular and writing integration tests. My friend also got another test from some other team and he was rejected too. Its too much time utilized for one task
Talk through architecture draw some pictures that represent data stores backend ui mocks. How would you build blind is probably a good example of what we might ask. YouTube some system design interview examples and you should have a good blueprint. Be humble kind and honest.
What's the TC for senior?

Crossed a line with my boss
I did an on-site with them a few months ago. Can’t remember much tbh. I remember one of the sessions was going over the take home submission with an engineer. Another was system design. Their engineers seemed depressed in the interview. They had 2 behavioural interviews that I decided to be candid in and I think that sealed it for me. No offer but I didn’t care.
How much time did u spent on take home ? Is take a project or leetcode questions?
Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully the panel interviewing me would be excited about working there (even if they fake it) :) People shouldn't be interviewing candidates if they are not having a good day or are tired. I think it really gives a wrong impression. So far I've read positive things in Blind about Carta. Hopefully that comes off during the interview 🤞
