Caveats to Airbnb Remote Work policy

I really want to work at a company that’s flexible on working abroad and PTO. I heard Airbnb had a good policy but I wanted to know if there are any caveats. Do they really let you work from any country for however long and pay you the same salary no matter where you are, or is that just a distant dream? That is, as long as you attend meetings and get work done. Can anyone who works at Airbnb comment?

Get an offer first. They’ve ignored every single one of my applications.

I don’t want to bother going through interviews if they can’t give me what I want. I’m sorry you were ignored but that’s not relevant to my question

Get an offer first else you are wasting everyone’s time, including yours.

I don’t work abroad, but it looks like it is only 90 days per year and there are some restrictions on the countries supported

90 days per country. You need manager approval too. However, you need an address in the country we hire you in. For example, you can work in 4 different countries for 90 days each within one year with manager approval, but you’ll need an address in the US (if you were hired for US) for taxes

Interesting. Thanks HR

90 days a year + need to get work authorization + figure out taxes.

I thought the initial policy was max 90 days per year, per foreign country. Am I remembering that wrong? Or do I have it right, and it's been changed since then?

There are rules that you can’t stay in a country for >90 days. You can be out of the county for entire year but you just can’t always stay in one country. So if it’s for you, it’s quite good. People get used to people working in another country, no problem with it, we don’t even ask or be surprised if you are in another country for a long time. It’s still the best policy I’ve ever heard, but in reality some points here - you can’t go back to your home country due to the 90 days policy, so it’s not like you get 500K USD and you can work somewhere else. It is nice to be able to stay there for 3 months though, but that’s it. - as staying in another timezone isn’t special, it’s not like 5 years ago, when you are out of US occasionally, people are so nice asking you to go to sleep, don’t bother replying. No as it’s a new normal, we still consider your timezone but in general you have to adjust your timezone to work with the team. I personally can’t work in a significantly different timezone for too long, it’s tiring. But yeah you can work in Hawaii/South America, it isn’t too crazy, but Asia probably no. - it’s quite expensive to live and work anywhere - if you have families this policy doesn’t really make difference, but I still appreciate that I can WFH indefinitely.

Thanks for this, super informative. Atlassian is similar with the 90 day policy. I’m happy to adjust my working hours so it’s good to know they’re open to that
