Moving to Chicago. Looking for advice. Good places to live? Good Schools for kids? Tips or insights? How's public transportation? Are the winters really as bad as everyone says? Thanks for the help!
I am a transplant living in Chicago for almost 11 years. Winter wise, it depends on what you are accustomed to... some winters are telatively mild with little precipitation. Others are bitter cold and windy... and they last into early May.

Move to Logan Square, Wicker Park, or Bucktown if you are traveling a lot for work. You will appreciate the Blue line on a Thursday night when it would take 1.5 hours to get to Lakeview from Ohare... when u can just ride the train for 30 to 40 minutes
Don't live there, but I've spent 3 years on a project there (going on 4). It's a great city, tons of culture and great places to eat/drink. The winters definitely suck. It's not so much the snow, since they're really good about removing it, it's just really cold for a really long time. One winter when I was here, it was below zero F for 30 straight days (talking daytime highs). The low during that winter was something like -25. Just awful.
I live in the loop, 10 min walk to the office. Absolutely love it
Lakeview is a nice neighborhood for families
I was in college so my lifestyle was different than what you will be looking for. But public transit was quite good in my opinion, as long as you live somewhere well connected. And the winters are definitely as bad as they say they are. My least favorite part about living there for sure.
Thanks for the insight. Excited but wary of the winter.
