It's the 3rd biggest city in the U.S. Why didn't it become a tech hub like NYC? How did smaller cities like Seattle and Austin become better in tech than Chicago? Asking because I generally like Chicago aside from the freezing winters.
Because southside. The gang culture has most of the country thinking it’s a shithole
Because it is a shithole lmao. People who spend the vast majority of their time in affluent areas then say "oh Chicago is so nice and safe!" No shit bud. You don't say?
@Transformco it is clear you do not live in Chicago or you are a conservative. Chicago became a prime target for conservative attacks after Obama became president.
A lot of HFTs are in Chicago.
If Microsoft or Amazon happened to be hq in Chicago it would look different. Just luck and chance and where founders had/have real estate.
I'm considering a role in Chicago and don't know anything about the city besides what you see in sensationalized media coverage. Recommendations on where to live with 3 little kids?
DM me and I can tell you more about the city. Forget the sensational news you hear in the media.
Corruption. Crook County. Etc. Etc.
NYC is an everything hub. Chicago didn’t become a tech hub because Spyglass was a shitshow from the start and Marc moved to Mountain View to get VC funding and start Netscape. Followed by a long line of other folks from UIUC.
The weather.
Taxes
Answer is definitely the weather. Far worse than the Bay Area, LA, NYC, Texas, Miami, etc. Winters are fucking awful and summers are hotter and more humid than most realize too.

Quite amazing that it only takes a company or two to completely transform a city.
