Is spending 12K per month normal or too much
Background: New Grad (B.S.) with 5+ previous internships Highly value: Culture/WLB > Growth/Upside > Benefits I have narrowed down my options to these 3 and having a hard time choosing. Remote offers are for current location. Note: These are maxed offers after negotiations. For new grad, Square does not negotiate and Google only negotiates stock. As for REMOTE, I would not mind coming into the office 1x per week (2x max) but on my own terms. Google would have been a no-brainer, but their rigid hybrid policy is making me reconsider. I highly prefer remote and coming into the office on my own terms. _____________________________________ Chime (remote): Team: Financial Platform Base: 145k Stock: 160k / 4 yrs at Current Valuation Bonus: 10% Reoccurring: 200k / yr _____________________________________ Google (Cambridge, MA): Team: N/A still in PA match Base:127k Stock: 100k / 4 yrs Bonus: 15% Reoccurring: 171k / yr _____________________________________ Square (remote): Still deciding the location Team: Seller Current offer (Tier 2 City): Base: 94k Stock: 130k / 4 yrs Reoccurring: 126.5k / yr Tier 1 City offer (NYC/SF/Seattle) Base: 120k Stock: 170k / 4 yrs Reoccurring: 162.5k / yr #engineering #software #swe #google #facebook #meta #amazon #apple #square #twitter #newgrad #remote #worklifebalance #microsoft #block #chime #offers #vs #ipo #wlb #stock #benefits #comp #faang #fang #netflix #databricks #lyft #snap #stripe #fintech #culture #hft #newgrad #newgradsalary #grad #pinterest #snap #roblox #airtable #plaid #stripe #brex
How’d you get your google offer before team match?
this post was copy-pasted from my last one. Its Technical Infra team/org
How many LC did you do?
~100
That’s pretty great stuff for you my guy
for once i thought its Amazon Chime 😂. I mean why they hiring for dumped project.
How would amazon chime be a company tho? This joke getting old. Nobody lists a project as a company :/
I didn't say Amazon Chime is a company. People write team or product name these days along with company. Also every product can be thought as a project.
I'd kill to have gotten in at Square's current share price. I know the offer seems pretty low but your RSU grant is probably the same as 2021 L5s. Remote life is also pretty great, but typically new grads benefit from some more mentorship which will always be stronger in person. Even if you go to a Square office there's a good chance all of your teammates will be elsewhere/remote and it's not the same as being in, say, a Google office.
Are you able to work from another country, or only domestically?
Square hasn’t been doing well, understandably. Are the odds still high when it comes to stock bouncing back to near ATH? I’ve also heard Cash App is where it’s at and Seller Side has gotten slow and beauracratic
Chime culture and WLB is amazing but as former Googler, the name will open doors. Get that first and then next role will be wide open for you
I have other FANG + top tech companies on my resume out of the 5+ internships I've done. Google would definitely help and open more doors, but apart from HFT and trading firms, idk how many more doors can be opened.
I had more leverage negotiating more senior levels after leaving google at many other tech companies (including at chime). It allowed me to hop over many levels that I doubt would be possible if I started my career at chime
Is Google not increasing your RSU based on the competing offers?
I worked at Google for 5 years and joined Chime 1 year ago. Love both companies. Google look amazing on your resume but you will most likely grow faster in your career at Chime. It is hard to stand out at Google as high impact projects may not come to you. At a growing startup high impact projects are all they focus on. If you think you will have trouble getting interviews you can join Google, if not I would join Chime.

For Square is a tier 2 city whatever would be considered an MCOL or LCOL? 30% is steep, geez
I'm not a new grad but I had offers from both Chime and Google last year. I chose Chime and I'm happy with that choice. For WLB, Chime gives extra Chime days off. There's 15 extra days off this year in addition to 12 days of holidays. So you have 27 days off right off the bat without taking any vacation. Vacation is unlimited PTO and people are free to use it. I'll probably take around 4 weeks this year. I'm not on FinPlat but I am on a project with high expectations. Even with that there's good awareness about working sustainably and reducing scope when possible. I haven't felt pressure to push myself beyond normal working efforts. Culture is great. It's the best place I've worked in my career. People care about the mission and leadership does a good job of communicating how the work we're doing impacts real people. For growth, we don't have the luxury of being a monopoly so there's lots of projects being worked on and lots of growth available if you want. I received a promotion 6 months after I joined. There's a lot more room for Chime to grow in the market as long as we execute well. FinPlat will be a great experience. You'll be working on something that will be the heart of Chime for years to come.
Google will be a big door opener in the future with likely the best WLB of the three.
Not to sound entitled here, just preference - Google would have been a no-brainer for me if they weren't so rigid on the remote policy. I wouldn't mind coming into the office once a week (twice max) but on my own terms, but seems Google won't budge on that front. I have also heard lately that the hybrid policy combined with the lowballing is leading to a small exodus there.
Op, regarding remote policy, you did correctly assess the situation at Google. Even for those whom Google approved remote, higher management is planning to give them low perf ratings, RSUs so that they are back to office in a few cycles. Cost saving or getting people in office, either way, management wins.
