I joined as an intern two weeks ago and still do not know what to expect. The mini description of the 2-month project sounded like a LC medium. On probing further my manager gave short duration as the reason and told to wait until dev setup. For that I'm assigned a "mentor" who is not much familiar with the (archaic) internal tools and having issues. S/he has no idea about the planned project and relevant part of codebase. Everyone seems completely laid back and emit "family vibes" with no appreciation of tech. I deeply regret turning down JPM for Cisco (found blind 2 months late). I am likely to get return offer for FTE after college (> 90% rate) but I can't imagine working in here and have started LC. Still, I want to know if my experience is the prevalent one and is there a way to salvage this "internship"? My biggest fear is to have nothing substantial to show for in future interviews. A solid internship will also help you with other companies as well. It’s not an all or nothing but a 60/40 split or maybe 70/30
Try to develop friendships with all the Cisco employees you meet. Even if you never see them outside of work because they have other stuff to do. It will make the internship more interesting One of the most amazing people I know works at Cisco.
That is a nice suggestion but I do not know how to accomplish it remotely. There was a hackathon planned and I met a few employees through that but it got cancelled and I didn't get to interact with other teams much. Coincidently my hackathon project aimed to solve exactly this problem of virtually "stumbling across" other employees using a Webex bot :D
Just message people a lot using Slack or whatever
Years ago I had a similar experience. I ended up spending most of my internship roaming the campus, watching movies, and having fun. I don’t regret it in the slightest and it didn’t affect my career. It’s an internship, you’ll be fine.
That sounds comforting. I guess I'll just LC, watch movies and try networking a bit haha
I worked at Cisco right out of school. Your experience and what you learn will vary heavily on the team and office you're in. If you work at one of the newer products that Cisco is growing, you can actually learn a lot and move fast. But most of the company is fairly sluggish in my opinion.
I’m in a similar position (also an intern). Wanna be friends lol
Yeah just use ur extra time to learn and LC so u can get a better offer for full time
