Laid off late last year at 1.5 yoe from my first job (iOS / full-stack at a decent sized startup). This is one of a handful of interview processes I've been able to get going since then. I know Comcast doesn't have the best reputation but I will take anything to pay the bills right now. Interview is with Effectv org in Philadelphia / Chester Springs and I have the HM/Manager chat soon. From searching Blind and Glassdoor I know teams at Comcast vary a lot in what they ask, so I'm only really hoping for broad-strokes insights, especially trying to find out what Comcast looks for in candidates for Eng2 positions. This role is listed as 1-2 yoe so I can't imagine they expect deep domain knowledge quite yet, any managers able to share some tips? I have to admit I'm worried that being from an iOS background is going to hurt me because this is a standard full-stack web dev role, and from what I've been able to gather looking at Engs' profiles on LinkedIn and the job description there's little direct overlap between the tech stack at my old job and this one. At this level (Eng2), is having general swe knowledge enough or should I continue dedicating time to studying this role's specific techs? Right now my single biggest worry is being caught off-guard with domain questions. Any help is much appreciated, thanks to anyone who responds in advance. Edit: Wanted to add that I have a B.S. in Comp. Sci. from a local university here in Philadelphia. TC: $0 (formerly $130k) #Comcast #Effectv #layoffs #interviews #swe #engineering #Philadelphia
Take whatever offer you get. You can always find better jobs later if this doesn’t fit you well. Pay will probably be low but you could have a good experience depending on the team.
Thanks for your response, I don't need a lot to be satisfied and the team seems like it's a good fit culturally and expectations-wise. I'm going into it with an optimistic mindset, definitely not going to turn my nose up at an honest job like this with a sensible tech stack and in a stable company.
Oh should add that I got done through their whole loop, so fingers crossed I get it 🤞. I think I did as well I could've possibly expected of myself, hope they took a liking to me.
Hey do you mind sharing the offer details if you go through that already.
Their interviews are tricky, usually they have coding part, every company nowadays thinks they are Google. After onboarding you would be one of 50 monkey supporting engineers responsible for low quality “system” that was developed before you. I haven’t seen such low quality in any other company. No surprise people post videos that Comcast charged them for internet even after they houses were burned out.
That's pretty much what I've heard from colleagues there but beggars can't be choosers unfortunately. I'm guessing this initial manager call is more of an informal / gauging domain experience type interview and then the final panel one would have leetcode questions?
