Just got off a call with a Comcast recruiter. At the end of the call she asked my salary expectations, since I didn’t want to waste anyone’s time I said I was expecting $200k TC for Philly. She said this wasn’t going to be possible and closest she could get to is around $130ish. My current TC in VA is $125. Now wondering if I should stop engaging in these TC convos during first recruiter calls? Or am I doing the right thing to not waste anyone’s time? (If I were interviewing with FAANG I would evade the TC convo, but with all other companies I feel like it’s better to be upfront — thoughts?) YoE: 4yrs Levels offered by Comcast: Mid to Lead Designer role
Level and yoe? People do make >200k TC in Philly
Sorry forgot to add that. YoE 4. She mentioned “Mid-Level Designer” or “Lead Designer” level.
Ok I’m not aware of non SWE payscales but 130k starting TC is probably fair. Ask her if designers get annual refreshers. Those tend to be generous for SWE
130 in philly is a huge step up from 125 in NoVa. 200k is definitely super unrealistic for philly with your YOE; you’d need to go T1/T2 to get that TC realistically with your YOE. Also if you are a UX dev the band is generally lower than SWE (if the company differentiates between the two). Suffice to say your expectations are pretty unreasonable given your experience and the companies you’re talking to
Not sure I agree with 130 being a huge step up from 125 in VA. My CoL isn’t that high. But thanks for your feedback! I’ll mull it over
CoL in Philly is super cheap as long as you don’t plan on living across the street from the Comcast building, but yea if you’re living out in like Leesburg now it won’t be as drastic as if you were in Arlington or Tyson’s
Where in VA?
Would you rather waste a day interviewing only to get the nasty surprise with the offer letter? Recruiters contact me daily, so I have an "auto-reply" that says "I am not lifting a finger for less than X" in a polite way (X is my TC + 30%). So far the best I've seen is X/2. There was a notable exception though - some jokers said "Not a problem, we can do X +25%. This will be base salary of X/3 and the rest in stock options." So I had to modify my auto-reply to include "monopoly money are not accepted here"
Don’t mislead people. SWEs can pull that attitude, OP is a designer. He’s lucky they’re still talking after an initial 200k demand.
I like his attitude. Sure I probably can’t command the same TC as a SWE, but I don’t want to sell myself short either. Though I might not be the best in my field, I’d like to strive to get there — in my experience most designers don’t know how to sell themselves, undersell themselves, or are simply no good. If I can escape those 3 categories I’m hopeful that I can make real coin :)
My friend is a lead designer for Comcast and he makes around 120k

I have a friend who works at Comcast and he makes $90k TC. he isn't a SWE but his position at fang would be $200k+
Ok cool, sounds like I made the right call then to talk money straight out the gate. Man I wish these other companies compensated as much, if not closer to FANG levels..
