Hi Y’all, Have 2 offers in my hand currently and need help from the tech community here to decide which one to pursue. I currently live in Texas. 1. MLE at Comcast. TC: 205k$; 165k base, 30k stocks and 10k sign on. Have to work out of NYC office after Covid 2. Senior Data Scientist at Blue Cross Blue Shield. TC:150k and 10k sign on. Potentially fully remote or maybe work at Dallas office. Also, I’ve read online that health care industry is somewhat resilient to market crashes and global pandemics (since we have been experiencing one, it’s something to think about). At least compared to publicly traded media conglomerate. And even if the pay is low, BCBS title has Senior in it. How far does this go in terms of career growth and interviewing at Faang at sometime in the future. One more concern is cost of living. I can live decent life with BCBS pay in Texas. I’d like to know if what Comcast offers me gives me the same in a place like NY or NJ. Current TC: 90k; YOE: 2 #softwareengineer #datascience #dataanalytics #machinelearning #machinelearningengineer #tech #swe
That is a high TC for Comcast. What will you do?
Your TC at Comcast is probably the NYC rates. Although it seems higher than BCBS, I don't think it's comparable to 150k in Dallas considering your living costs. You may need a salary calculator to find out the comparable TC in NYC to a 150k in Dallas. I guess that would be around 300k.
So you mean bcbs is a better option if it’s about money?
If go with BCBS, you can enjoy better life and have less pressure in Dallas. On the other hand, you can have more opportunities in the future as mle and live a very different lifestyle in NYC. It's your choice. Think about what's your preference.

The bcbs I worked at had layoffs during the pandemic fyi - because their sg&a was bloated. The bcbs I worked at was truly dysfunctional and was not worth the time I spent there — I tried to get out as soon as I could. It really depends on your manager and team. Do they seem competent? The pace can be very slow with pushback from leadership at every turn. But they are all different. You’ve been warned.
