Commuting from Princeton, NJ to NYC

Due to family reasons need to move to Princeton, NJ or areas close by. it looks like it NYC is the obvious place to apply for jobs, due to the sheer number of companies there. how practical is the commute from Princeton to NYC? Not very familiar with the area. Alternatively, what are some other locations to find dev jobs?

There’s a train to Penn station. About an hour commute.

Very practical if you take the train. Many people do just that.

Njtransit to NYPenn station, fast train gets there in 50min. If you're in lower Manhattan, njtransit to newarkpenn station and transfer to PATH

Not bad actually. There are a number of NJTransit express trains to NY Penn Station. It’ll take you a little under an hour from Princeton Junction Train Station to NY Penn. Then it just depends on where the office is located in NY. It’s really not a bad commute if you find a place close to the train in Princeton and find a job close to NYP. I’d focus on places in Manhattan. Going to Brooklyn will take a while.

Take trains. I take trains from Millburn to NYC everyday.

Train is the best option. Just be aware that parking for the Princeton Junction train station is an absolute b*tch and there may be a wait list on the order of several years to get a reserved parking spot. If you can have someone pick you up and drop you off from the train, you'll be fine.

Trying to understand if it is possible to buy/rent at a place that is Uber-able. I mean till you secure a parking spot, would it be possible to just uber? Sounds expensive, but looking at google maps, there’s much other alternative if I don’t get a drop off.

Not sure really. I guess you can try to find ubers at 7:30am? That might be a big pain in the ass though. Maybe look into the NJ Transit and/or Academy buses from Princeton to NYC as a temporary measure while you wait for your parking spot.

Can confirm the parking wait list is measured in years. You should apply today if possible

Thank you for such quick responses! Have been stressing about this for a while - never had to mega-commute. Was delighted to see Bloomberg has an office in Princeton, started leeting with it in mind. Good to hear it wouldn’t be that bad.

Merrill Lynch tech is headquartered in Hopewell not far from Princeton.

Didn’t realize that ML was still a separate entity from BAML - Must be the wealth management and not under global markets? used to work for global markets. Would be good to know how different it is from BAML in general - like the tech stack, culture.

You could also look for jobs in Philadelphia metro area, it's pretty easy drive to Princeton (about an hour or so) and there are a few fin tech companies there

Also a lot of my friends used to commute an hour and a half by car, so it's not uncommon to be driving yourself around in the tri state area
