Recently I went thru rental application and found that real estate agent verified my employment status thru theworknumber - I was bit suprised they could do that! When I logged into their portal I see they got complete information - my income, bonus, my leaves, 401K details, title, health insurance, etc. damn complete details of every payroll period. I never consented to it. I feel it is a full breach of my privacy. Literally, anyone can see my full details!! A foreign/Chinese entity could easily use/buy that data from Equifax/TWN? I am suprised company expects employees to protect their data, but they are freely sharing/selling ours?
"foreign/chinese" lmao
They would stupid not to use this information to target people in financial need with access to trade or government secrets.
Freeze your TWN. But yeah, companies like TWN should be illegal.
Why should anyone pay for Equifax data when they can just wait for another breach?
Just like the big tobacco lawsuits there needs to a be data breach law suit. These companies hoard and sell our data and worse don’t even practice common sense to safeguard it. A little over a year ago I got a letter in mail from Morgan Stanley how they gave away their old servers without scrubbing hard drives and one of those servers had my complete info including ssn and other PII and all they offer is 2 years of life lock. BIG FUCK YOU to Morgan Stanley and BIG FUCK to your imbecile IT security team who is so incompetent that it makes a kindergartener look more computer savvy. Closed my account and would never give a dime to that shitshow company. But this was not an isolated incident. So what could be a permanent viable solution? $10,000 fine per user per incident paid not to Federal government but directly to the person whose information was compromised?
the issue is not the bank, but the government that doesn't jail every manager in the chain of command up to the CEO 7 years or more like they do with hackers.
I disagree, the bank must have made cost saving or time saving decision to dispose off those servers. People know and do get in jail for DUI yet many people still do it. So putting in jail won’t be sufficient fining for each case will.
First time I’ve heard of this. That sounds illegal?
Since you explicitly mentioned "foreign/Chinese entity", are you're more concerned with these parties than someone in the US using your data against you?
yep, any scammer from any country they operate from.
Is there a good online guide explaining how one can block/freeze anything related to this? I guess twn may not be the only one?
You cannot, it depends on whether your employer report to equifax, you can't control it
You’re very late to this party. But yeah, theworknumber is disgusting and shouldn’t be legal/exist. Same with others like LexusNexus, etc.
