What are your thoughts on companies (such as Datadog and Spotify) that 1, allow people to work from anywhere/home, and 2, don’t adjust compensation based on your location? Personally, I like it because it benefits me. I get paid the same as someone in SF despite that I live in a much more affordable city. However, I don’t think it’s fair. #wfh #Datadog #Spotify #Facebook #google #Amazon
Your pay should reflect your value to the company regardless of location. Period. Where you choose to live is your business.
Completely agree, though I'd be shocked to find companies that agree. The forcing function will be companies having to match other companies to be competitive for talent.
No your pay is based on opportunity cost. How much does it cost to replace you
Lol but Spotify comp is way lower than other tech companies lol
Im not aware of this
Now that you know, you can move to a small town in Pennsylvania and live very lavishly!
One thing we probably should keep in mind that cost of living does not give us the full picture . It is not just only full of positives for people who are choosing to live in low COL areas. There are negatives too - you have to sacrifice sometimes in terms of weather, sometimes in terms of cultural and food options and sometimes compromise on other factors such as in person networking opportunities. For example, someone living in Seattle or the Bay Area has many beautiful gateways within driving distance. Someone living in middle of Indiana - not much. He probably uses some of the “extra” money to “buy” those experiences as flying is often the only option to go somewhere decent, especially during winter. At the end of the day, each individual decides his own trade offs.
Hey datadog, Can I have referral?
If this trend continues and other large companies adopt it, it won’t matter in the long term since a lot of people will opt to move to cheaper cities if companies offer the same salary. This’ll bring COL for the cheaper cities up and (big maybe) a bit down for tier 1 cities like SF. For the short term @Datadog said it best above^ Employees are paid for their work, so if two people do the exact same work, all else being equal, it doesn’t make sense to pay one more than other solely on location if the output is the same.
Keep in mind those companies don’t pay as well as SF companies. Heck they aren’t even Silicon Valley tech companies to begin with So you’re not really gaining: it’s folks who work at datadog & Spotify but live in SF there losing.
Would you consider Reddit a well-paying company? Because I think they also don’t adjust comp based on location
No reddit is also trash tier pay
