Any tech companies out there that dont force a % on perf management? Share them in comments. Perf management is necessary, but managing people out with a quota is controversial to me. It’s probably helping increase talent density but also a cutthroat culture and you might argue that it affects mental health. Poll: What do you think?
Nvidia
OP was asking about quota to pip bottom X%, this is not happening in any team at Nvidia. Now based on your performance and team, yes you could get piped, but in general it is pretty rare
I’m at MSFT and I swear we need to PIP more. Some of the people I work with are complete fcking morons.
You seem lovely
I know, I sound like a jerk but there’s a lot of dead weight. I think forced PIP quotas are horrid and completely inhumane.
PIP would be useful if it actually targets deadweight to improve or GTFO not as a weapon asshole managers use on anyone they perceive as threats Dont get me started on target quota
This

Strongly agree. It’s probably efficient and worth it from the company’s perspective but it is genuinely inhumane. Especially when you couple it with h1b workers who risk deportation if they find themselves jobless, you’ll find entire teams and orgs putting in unhealthy hours. Good for the companies, horrible for employee mental health. It is not sustainable, but since IC’s are replaceable companies don’t care. Our growth obsessed capitalistic society and its effects on the human mind need to be examined closer. It’s no wonder suicide rates are skyrocketing, and already so high in high octane work environment countries like Japan.
