There are some companies like Automattic that have processes that don’t include whiteboard interviews. I have autism and anxiety and while I can ace a Hackerrank test, doing it while someone is looking at me and talking to me is a whole different story. Know of any other companies that either have projects etc. as their process or allow alternative accommodations for autistic folks?
Try consulting companies.
The level of travel required in those is also not great.
I mean some contracts are remote or hybrid but yes I understand travel could be needed based on the client.
Half of tech industry is autistic. Don’t focus on excuses, but on your strength. Find a few mock partners and practice a lot. Try pramp.com. The peer doesn’t need to be good. You just need to practice solving problems in front of someone. After a while this environment will be familiar to you and it won’t create anxiety.
I have practiced a lot! The problem is that practice will never replicate the dread that happens in the actual interview. I’ve actually gotten worse over the years, the more I do them. My last one I just closed my laptop mid final round interview before saying I don’t feel well and ghosted the recruiting team after that. It’s not an excuse, I just don’t think it’s possible for me. Doesn’t mean I’m not a good coder.
Also having autistic traits isn’t the same as having disability-benefits eligible autism.
