I think your friend needs to worry less about TC. They should try to go out and touch some grass though. It might help making them more in touch with reality.

Believe it or not, I’m actually an IC who thinks there is more to life than TC and that obsession about it is extremely unhealthy (especially when you already have a 300k+ offer as a fresh phd grad). While it’s good to look out for your own interest and financial well-being, after a certain level it can set you on a path of toxic obsession that robs you of joys from other things in life.
As a research scientist or swe? Deep mind, open ai, Google brain.
Systems PhD isn’t qualified for that
FAIR
At the PhD level, it's more about the specific role at the company. Both Google and FB are capable of offering 2x more depending on your friend's specialization and the particular fit for the role. Brain and FAIR generally will give the big bucks with negotiation.
